Question

Connect to and configure HP Jetdirect 170x Print Server

Asked by: xy8088

I just found a box of old HP Jetdirect 170x print servers. I am assuming that to configure them I need to plug a crossover (or straight through?) cable in to them, type an IP (what IP?) into a borwser and will be given a config page.

Does anyone knoe the basic rundown on what the info I need is or where I can find a manual teling me what the default IP is, what the default admin user/pass is, etc?

Attach a PCL compatible printer, press the test button on the 170X and this should tell you what IP address the 170X currently has. If it has never been installed, then its default address is 192.0.0.192.

However, if it has been used on a real network then that address will almost certainly have been changed. You can get it back to the default address by doing a cold reset. Unplug the power cord, then hold down the TEST button for five to 30 seconds while plugging in the power cord.

The cable to use is a crossover if you are plugging the JetDirect directly into a PC, and a normal cable if using a hub/switch/router. You will need to make sure the PC has an IP address on the same subnet (192.0.0.x).

Excellent. I needed to set one of these up today that someone else had on their network and this worked perfectly.

You can get it back to the default address by doing a cold reset. Unplug the power cord, then hold down the TEST button for five to 30 seconds while plugging in the power cord. Worked for me! I just had to be patient, it seemed like it took another minute or two to finally respond to pings.

The main thing to remember is when you first plug it in to the network, make sure you press the Test button before you try to find it in JetAdmin. Without pressing Test, it won't start communicating with the network, so you'll be looking for something that doesn't exist yet
