Difference between Print drivers PCL 5 and PCL 6?  Which one is the better driver to use on WIndows Server 2003?

PCL 6 is the way to go but .... a lot of it will depend on the software you use. A lot of older software will have problems printing to a PCL-6 driver. The safest bet is PCL-5 unless you feel confident about your software packages.

Thanks, DansDadUK for that clear explanation of the differences. I have seen little concrete info on PCL6, and your post makes things a lot clearer.

In my experience, PCL6 often causes trouble, in a variety of ways (PCL XL error, slow performance, etc). I've seen this even with the latest versions of M$ Office. In all cases this is fixed by using PCL5. There is very little support for PCL anywhere, but with PCL5 you can at least go through the commands to find out why things go wrong. PCL6, being binary, makes that impossible. Of course, if you're just using Windows drivers then you're unlikely to gain anything by debugging the printer output!
