The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Print dialogue box slow to appear

Asked by reymentk in Printers, Windows XP Operating System

Dear Experts,

I'm stumped. Never seen anything like this before. Hope you can shed some light. Tried everything I know.

Introduced three brand new Compaq PC onto the LAN of about 20-30 machines. Very fast specs (ie. Dual CPU, 3Gb RAM, XP Pro SP2) so performance should not be an issue. The PC's are excellent in every aspect with exception to one having printing issues. All PC's came with Office 2007 but has been downgraded to Office XP because of an incompatibility with existing specialised software (no surprises there!). On the affected machine the print dialogue box takes 20-30 seconds to appear with print jobs on networked locations or from networked based software, but will appear normally with documents that are on the hard drive, or to printers connected to local ports.

The LAN config is as follows;

SBS 2003 server on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 (Rack mounted, heaps of memory and CPU power)
All PC Clients use DHCP and roaming profiles. Network speed is 10/100.
All networked printers are not shared through the server. Instead for each client PC I have setup a local port mapped to the IP address for each printer. Ie. HP 4350 prints to 10.0.0.213. Works beautifully for all clients except this one machine. On the affected PC I have upgraded to the latest printer drivers and NIC drivers, I have tried printing directly to all printers to no avail. The print quality has also been downgraded to the lowest settings to no avail. The affected machine also takes forever to open .pdf files using Adobe Acrobat 8.1.1, which has now been uninstalled and replaced with PDF viewer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
