I want to post a solution to a problem here with HP Printers for which I have been searching for quite some time. Naturally, HP were completely USELESS in providing any assistance whatsoever - and I cannot express (at least in words suitable for this site) my utter disdain with the entire company and their products - but I digress!
The problem was with a HP PSC2510 printer. On Initialization / Start up it would scan to the right and then jam. It was as if the scanning mechanism could not locate its start point when initializing and continue moving to the right as far as it could go and then just keep going, making an awful sounding racket as the gears slipped while the dopey printer continued to push the scan head well beyond its start point. The problem effectively rendered the printer useless. Of course you could not do anything whatsoever with the printer because after a few minutes of ramming the scan head into the side of the printer it would give up and turn itself off. Just excellent.
Looking around the web I finally discovered the problem was with a dirty scanning glass - but not the top - rather the bottom. Then came the question of how to get to the underside of the glass which was not immediately obvious.
I found this post of a HP PSC 2210xi and using this as a basis I did something similar for the HP PSC 2510 Refer:
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/14863#3To get to the underside of the glass on the PSC 2510 so that it can be cleaned, we need to find the 5 screws holding down the frame which contains the glass. Do the following:
1) Stand in front of the printer and keeping the keypad \ display on your right.
2) Start by removing the flip top lid. To do so, firstly unclip the cable connecting the lid to the main printer body. Lift the lid as normal (so it is upright) then grasping the sides of the lid (near the hinges) with both hands, gently pull it upwards. It should snap out.
3) Next we need to remove the plastic keypad cover that frames the buttons i.e. the one with label "HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one" etc etc on it. The cover is held in place on the printer with four clips:
2 clips on the right (next to the 'Scan' button and just below the '123' number row) and
2 clips on the left (next to the 'Copy' button and again just below the '123' number row)
Remove the cover by inserting a small screwdriver near each of those clips and prying up gently - one at a time. The cover should eventually pop out as each retaining tab is unclipped
4) Next we will need to remove the whole combined keypad \ display unit as this is just sitting on the printer and held in place by a single clip. With the keypad cover off, you'll see a small square hole just below the black print button. Push a small screwdriver down into this hole and feel for the springy resistance from another plastic retaining tab. While gently holding the tab down with the screwdriver, slide the whole keypad/display assembly toward the front of the printer. It should slide reasonably easily. Slide it enough so that it separates from the printer, but be aware there are two flex cables attached to this unit - one for the display and one for the keypad. For ease of the rest of the work, it is easy enough to remove the flex cables from the display \ keypad unit and keep the unit aside.
5) Now you are ready to remove the five screws holding down the frame for the scanning glass. Note the screws are a 'star' type. You can use an appropriately sized 'Allen Key' to unscrew them if youdont have a star screw driver.
- There are two screws on the right side of the printer where the display\keypad unit normally sits (front and rear)
- There is one screw where the flip top lid normally sits
- There are two screws on the left hand side of the scanning glass frame (again front and rear)
6) Once these are removed the entire frame should now be easy enough to lift off.
7) Clean the glass, (I used a warm slightly damp cloth and Windex) paying attention to the white strip you will see. I believe this is how the scan heads locates its start point. In my case this was sufficient to get the printer working - i.e. the scan head was able to position itself properly.
8) I have read in other posts that you can *carefully* clean the scanner bulb (thin glass) and mirror (in a long slot apparently with a cotton bud again moistened with a alcohol based glass cleaner (not water). I have also read it is best not to clean the scanner bulb with compressed air as this just puts moisture on the bulb which you do not want
9) To reassemble printer, read these instructions backwards :-)
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I hope it is detailed enough to help you so that you do not need to experience the frustration I went thru in getting this problem fixed. At least now knowing this, I am not going to throw out the last of my HP devices. Yet. :-)
Best of luck to you.
cheers
