Dell MFP Laser 3115cn Scan to Network Folder Problems.

Hello everyone,
I have purchased this Dell MFP Laser 3115 cn and I could not get the Scan to File work on it. I'm trying using my Windows 2003 DC as my file server and I have created a folder and shared it on the network. I have also created a user for printer to use for to scan to the designated network drive and gave that user full access right to the folder. I have filled out all the required information which I have attached the GUI settings for that just incase if i'm doing something wrong. Also I have searched and found out the following link below regarding the problem and applied the accepted solution but no luck. Is there anyone out there who managed to get this function work on this printer or got any recommendations how resolve my problem. This function is pretty much one of the two reasons why I purchased this printer.

Thank you.

» Set Up the Address Book

To set up the server addresses in the address book in Embedded Web Server (EWS):
Open a Web browser.

Type the IP address of the printer and click Go.

In the printer's Web page, click Address Book, click the Server Address tab, and then click Create.

Click Print Server Settings.

In the Server Address screen, fill in the EWS fields per the below information:

Name: Enter any name.
Server Type: Select SMB if you are storing the document in a shared folder from your Microsoft Windows operating system. Select FTP if you have an FTP server.
Server Address: Enter the IP address of the computer or the FTP server that you have shared out.
Server Port Number: Enter the Server Port Number. If you are unsure, you can enter the default value of 139 for SMB and 21 for FTP.
Login Name: Enter the user account name that has access to the shared folder on your computer or FTP server.
Login Password: Check Enable Password and enter the password corresponding to the above login name.
Share Name: Enter the name of the shared folder on the recipient computer. For SMB only.
Server Path: Enter the path where you want the scanned document to be stored. Ensure that the path is already created in the shared folder or FTP server.

Do you get any error messages on the printer?

Try using just "scanner" as the login name.

these settings work for me.  adjust them as appropriate for you.

name:  <friendly name>
server address:  172.19.19.100
server port number:  139
login name: scanner
share name:  documents
server path: user1

this saves the scan to \\172.19.19.100\documents\user1 and using the DOMAIN\scanner AD account to authenticate.

good luck.

Dear HDhoundt,
The error code was in my initial post :Smb ftp error 016-783 ". Very genereic error means eaither the prmission was set incorrectly or wrong user/folder cridentials were used.
Thanks.

Dear Jasonlaseen,
Is user1 also shared or is it a folder under the shared folder called" Documents"? If I understand it correctly you also run it in a domain envireonment. Did you have to change anything on the Security policies to get it to work? I will let you know when I get to office.
Thanks.
Dahter
yes, i run it in a domain environment. (server 2003)
in my example, user1 is a folder located at \\172.19.19.100\documents\user1 where \\172.19.19.100\documents is shared with the share name: documents
the way i have our network set up, i have a general share called 'documents' and each user has their own folder under that.  The documents share gives the Scanner account full access.  Each user gets full access to their own folder (not that it would matter on this example though).  Also, be sure to give the scanner account full access on the share permissions.  Let me know if you don't know what I'm talking about here.  (In my setup, I also give Authenticated Users full control in share permissions.)
Let me know how it turns out.

Hi jason,
I'm totally loosing it. I have tried almost everything to make it work but I keep getting the same SMB/FTP Error message.  I have attached a screenshot of my settings on Dell user interface. But before you look into that I want to tell you what I have done so far.
I created a user name called Scanner.
I created a folder called Documents and shared the folder. Set the permissions under Sharing permissions and Folder Security. Gave full rights to the user Scanner.
I created another folder under documents called test which apperantley inhertited all the parent folder security rights.
I went into the Dell User interface. I went under the Adress book and Server settings and set it up as the attached file.
Is there any error that you can see? Dell support btw is terrible. All they do is read it from a manual available from us. Any question that I ask which is not in their manual can not be answered by their support team. So my only chance is this site and you guys.

I think Dell MFP 3115 is a good product but it has the worst technical documentation and dell tech support is terrible. I'm glad that experts always help eachother. Great help. Thanks.
Wow, this printer was a pain in the arse. Your tutorials helped a lot, Jasonlassen's helped the most. For my setup I left the server path blank, because I just wanted the scans to show up in the root of that scanned folder. That was lame.
thanks for the friendly comment, glad i could help out!
the Screen shots helped alot. Thank you jason
Yes it is very odd without the screen shots I would never of figured it out
