Question

A particular SD card cannot be read by cmputer, works in other machines and previously on this machine. Other cards read fine.

Asked by: caperionllc

Having a problem getting computer to recognize a particular micro SD card in laptop.  Card must be used with SD adapter.  Have many cards and a couple adapters.  All cards work with both adapters except this one card.  This card does however work with no problems in HTC 6800 (Sprint Mogule) Windows Mobile 6 phone.  The card also does not work in a digital camera.  The card previously worked in all 3 devices until recently.  Don't know what could have happened to the card or why it is not being recognized.  Believe it stoped being recognized while in the digital camera.  Would expect card to be bad but works fine in phone. I have insepcted card and find no apparent size differences for a loose connection, no scrape or corrosion on pins, etc.  When inserted in computer there is not even an attempt for the computer to read the device as if it was not there at all.

1) what would cause the card to work flawlessly and all of a sudden stop working?
2) could there be a lock mechanism software or hardware that would cause the device not to be recognized?
3) is there any resolve to this as this is my largest SD card and I would like to continue to use it?

Please read question again before asking to repeat scenario.  Thank you in advance.

Did you by any chance open the card hatch and remove the card without turning off the camera?  That is one of the primary reasons I'm aware of for card corruption.

I believe that there may be a lock mechanism - my card (new camera, new media) is currently downloading images - I'll check shortly to see if I can identify it.

Have you tried reformatting the disk in your camera?

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-01 at 16:26:03ID: 22363320

I have not tried reformatting in camera yet.  currently have the card in mobile phone (which still works fine) downloading all data from card via USB sync cable and will try any recommended solutions once finished.  do you recommend reformatting in camera or phone?  remember computer won't read at all or give option to format.

yeah.. you need to reformat the card in the device you'll be using.. remember the old floppy disc days when a formatted disc wouldnt work in other drives.. just depends on their particular encoding / redaing method employed on the particular card as to whether it'll work or not.. you'll probably find that after you've formatted it in your camera it'll still work in your phone etc etc..

by: periwinklePosted on 2008-09-01 at 16:32:02ID: 22363331

I agree with PsychoFelix - if you are using the card in the phone, then it should be formatted in the phone; if being used on the camera, then formatted in the camera.

by: periwinklePosted on 2008-09-01 at 16:41:20ID: 22363351

I looked at my card with the 'nipped' corner in the upper right.  On the left hand side is a small lever that can be rotated down to 'lock' the card - is that the case for you?

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-01 at 17:02:03ID: 22363417

could not figure out how to format card using phone, so tried to reformat with camera.  as soon as card was placed in camera it was able to read it again (weird).  I also cannot figure out how to use the camera to reformat the SD card.  So now the only problem is what I originally began with.  Card is still not recognized in XP computers (tried 2 now) and I need to be able to transfer files back and forth between phone, camera and computer and a USB sync cable is not always available.  Ex: to email pictures taken on camera or to put music on card to be played in phone as MP3 player.  Any more ideas?

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-01 at 17:03:15ID: 22363423

only change was several pictures (about 100) were deleted off of card using the phone after they were backed up on PC via USB sync.

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-01 at 17:09:58ID: 22363444

response to Periwinkle:  Yes, the full sized SD card (adapter) has a sliding lock on left hand side.  This however only makes the card write protected for as far as I can tell and does not appear to affect the computer's ability to recognize the cards.  Other cards are recognized with this slide in either position.  This card is not recognized either way.

by: PsychoFelixPosted on 2008-09-01 at 17:22:56ID: 22363479

have you tried formatting the card in the PC ?

even though thePC may not be recognising it, go to administrative tools / disk manager/ and low level it as a FAT device in there..

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-01 at 17:26:00ID: 22363485

already tried.  computer truly does not recognize device.  disk mgr only shows the hard drive and cd-rom, no other disks even available to format.

i remember a few years ago i had a SD card that wouldnt be recognised in my ipaq, yet worked fine in PC.. same sort of thing, i went and got a different brand and it worked fine.. maybe you should get a different one to try with..

by: periwinklePosted on 2008-09-01 at 18:03:53ID: 22363580

Have you tried contacting the manufacturer of the SD card?  They might have seen this issue previously?

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-01 at 20:11:37ID: 22363972

response to PsychoFelix:  brand of card is SanDisk, marketed as compatable with all units.  This is even the more expensive card rated for HD.  Not that I am stuck on SanDisk, but this exact card worked fine in all of these devices for about 3 months before it stopped being recognized.

response to periwinkle:  I have not yet tried checking w/the manufacturer, will do that tomorrow, thanks.

never found a solution, gave up on card

by: caperionllcPosted on 2008-09-21 at 08:19:39ID: 31492186

I also believe that if the option were available to do this then it wold probably have fixed the problem.  Unfortuatly the devices did not have a format option.
