I have a pdf file which in 100% zoom is a non-standard size, but bigger then A0. I need to print this file in the original size on a A4 printer (Canon IP1600 in fact) like a poster - tile by tile.
I have already tried:
- on Windows from Adobe Reader 7, using printer driver settings to print posters - unfortunately the largest poster available this way is A2 (non-standard size settings doesn't allow for bigger sizes as well)
- on OpenSuse I've tried this path:
pdftops filename.pdf filename.ps
poster filename.ps > filenameA4.ps
ps2pdf filenameA4.ps - which yields :Unexpected interpreter error -15
lpr filenameA4.ps - doesn't print anything, the ps file seems to be empty, even though it has more then 300KB in size.
Any solution (Windows or linux, I don't mind), preferably for free is welcomed - Acrobat/Distiller is out of question, as I don't have them.

If you only need it for this one occasion, how about downloading a demo version of some posterising software? Examples are ClickBook and ProPoster. If one of them works for you and you need it again, you can even buy a full version - neither is expensive. You can get them from:

@MASQUERAID - there is no 'tile ...' option in Acrobat Reader (not in mine anyway)
@hdhondt - I tried ClickBook without success (didn't allow printing of large docs) and proposter doesn't support pdf.
I'm trying this way now: export pdf to image, set image as background in AutoCad, scale it from some known dimension, and print manually tile by tile - pretty much to do, but I'll see if it's feasible

Apologies - It seems some of my machines have this and others don't because of some commercial print drivers.
Here's a further workaround that will get you the pattern printed from the PDF by tiling from MSPaint using a virtual print driver:
Install 30-day trial version of Zan Virtual Printer Driver

Open PDF in Acrobat Reader
In Printer Setup:
- Select output format as Monochrome BMP
- Create a Custom Page Size of 85x24inches (2200x610mm)
Print to the Zan (bw) virtual printer
Save the output BMP (it will be around 22MB)
Open the resultant file in Windows Paint which natively supports large image tiling.
Print the file to your A4 printer (you'll need around 40 pages)

Have you tried using "Tile Large Pages" option from the Page Scaling options in Acrobat Reader?
This gives you a print preview window - Use it to reduce the scaling % from 100 until you get a 2 page split on the screen (the will be 2 x A4 pages) then do a test print.
Watch out for the gutter margin though - unless you printer supports edge printing this will be cropped off the paper.
