Question

HP Printer stalls or doesnt print

Asked by: ralphtricoche

We have just purchased a new HP LaserJet 2055dn connected to one workstation (local) using a USB cable. The workstation is using Win Xp as its OS and its fully updated with the latest updates from MS. Also it has 1 gig of memory.

The issue is that whenever we try to print to the printer, the print job comes back saying it cannot print. Even though it might the silliest of print jobs, or some text.

What has worked is turn off the printer, waiting 10 seconds then turning back on. Not even restarting the workstation seems to work all the time.
Any ideas?

Where did you get the drivers for the HP LaserJet? Where they are on install disk or did you download them from HP? I would recommend downloading the driver from HP..there are three different drivers to choose from under Universal Print Drivers:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3662058&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=3662052&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228
Download all three and save to a folder on your desktop (the one the printer is installed on) Unplug USB cable fom Computer, Uninstall the printer completely, also make sure that the files you downloaded , if zipped, are unzipped. Restart, Turn on the printer and plug it into the USB slot. It should plug and play and it may either install on it's own or prompt to point to file. If it prompts point it too one of the three drivers you downloaded. I recommend starting with the PCL 5.... Now if it installs without a prompt and still does not print, in Device Manager, right click on the printer and select update driver, don't  let it automatically select, and point it to one of the other 3 drivers you downloaded from HP.

Thank you for your response. I tried your suggestion and I still have the same issue. The printer will not printer sometimes. Unless I turn it on then off and sometimes even that wont work. Any other suggestions?

You tried all 3 drivers, and installed them the exactly the same way? Did you uninstall each driver before trying the next? How about trying the actual HP drivers (I think there are 3 of those as well) in that link I sent?

by: ralphtricochePosted on 2009-04-07 at 13:38:15ID: 24091667

Yes. I tried all the drivers including the ones on the CD. It's just random. I am now installing service pack 3, since I did a little reading and I saw that sometimes newer HP and service pack 3 help one another. Any other ideas would be welcomed. Thank you for assisting.

Have you tried this printer on any other machine? Is it possible that the USB cable is defective or even the usb port itself?

by: ralphtricochePosted on 2009-04-07 at 13:49:45ID: 24091808

maybe the port. I will try a different port. BUT the cable is brand new. I just bought it. However I notice that the printer goes OFFLINE when not in use for a certain period of time. If I turn it on and off, all the print jobs backed up print just fine. Im sure its a setting. But the menu is a bit complicated. If you hit on it before I do I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

With the printer on and plugged in, go into the device manager and right click on the printer, go to properties, maybe there is some kind of setting, like a power saver setting?

by: ralphtricochePosted on 2009-05-05 at 11:23:19ID: 24307533

No, there are no settings that would allow me to set the timer/or sleep mode on or off. Its the craziests thing. If I turn printer off then on again it will print whatever is in queue. If it's idle for too long it gives errors and wont print. Its local to the computer, so its not networked and the workstation is fully updated via windows update.

Are you showing any errors in the event viewer? There has got to be something in the printer properties or driver that is causing this to go into a power save mode of some sort..hence the reason it doesn't work untill you shut if off then turn it back on...

by: ralphtricochePosted on 2009-05-05 at 12:53:49ID: 24308518

Ill check event viewer and report back.

I am having problems with this driver too.  It crashes my spooler and I can't seem to uninstall.

I know this is not a direct solution to your problem, but, as your printer has a network port, why not network it? In my experience, networking always produces more reliable printing than USB.

If you have a router, plug the printer into that. If the PC is not networked either, buy an RJ-45 cross-over cable and plug the printer into the PC's network port.

I wanted to thank everyone for helping with this issue. Seems that the printer was just faulty. I replaced this printer with another printer (same make and model) and now it works. Go figure.  Thanks again.
