Question

"Before you can perform print-related tasks you need to install a printer"

Asked by: Mahdii7

"Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer"

* I have 2 printers installed, a networked Konica Minolta, and an Adobe PDF default printer.

* This only happens in Photoshop CS4, can print from other CS4 graphic applications just fine (and of course anything that isn't Adobe)

* Setting the default printer to Adobe PDF, as suggested all over the internet, does not solve my problem

* When I have a file that gets this error (not all files do), I can never get it to print no matter what I do, what does temporarily work for me is CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E copy and paste into a new document

Specs:
(Brand new computer - All that may apply)
Adobe Design Standard CS4 - (new and updated)
Windows Vista Ultimate - 64 Bit - (new and updated)
Konica Minolta MagiColor 7450 (With latest vista 64 PS drivers installed, installed as a network printer by IP, no errors reported)
Core i7 920
6GB DDR3 1600 memory
OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD (primary drive)
Gigabyte motherboard (GA-EX58-UD3R)

Thanks in advance, no solution from Adobe, counting on you guys!

-Is your disk space enough?
-Did you try to uninstalling and reinstalling your printers?
-Did you try to print from another computer on your network?
and just wondered, does it print when you flatten the image?

I see where you are going biyik and it's a good idea. Photoshop does not have it's own print spooler and if you run out of memory, you can't print sometimes without any sort of message. More disk space for the scratch disk or flattening the image to compact the size are good tests.

The trouble is that that sort of problem doesn't give this type of error message. Reinstalling the printers may do the trick, but my guess is that it won't. If the other CS4 applications print fine the problem would seem to be elsewhere.

I'm going to do some headscratching and ask around, but in the mean time, try rebuilding the preference file. Restart Photoshop and hold down the Ctrl, Shift and Alt keys while it starts up. If you get your timing right, you will get a warning asking if you want to Delete the Photoshop Settings File (say yes) [ If you get a question about your scratch drive or no question at all, you didn't get all of your keys pressed in time - start over ]

This causes Photoshop to go and look for the filters and addons and build a new internal list. With a little bit of luck, this may do the trick. In the mean time, I'll be trying to find something else in case this doesn't work.

Thanks so much for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

biyik:
- 80+ GB free on the SSD, running files from a 1TB secondary drive with around 900GB free
- Many times, had no effect
- Yes, was able to print from a fax machine (networked through another computer, mac even)
- If I flatten the image it doesn't print, if I flatten the image and paste into a brand new file it usually does.

Thank you so much! It's still a little early to tell, but it looks like the print dialogue in Photoshop comes up consistently after rebuilding the prefs. I'll give it a few to see if this solved the problem, but I'm pretty confident it made a positive impact. Sure hope this helps others too, lots of people seem to be having this problem.

For the record - rebuilding the prefs on a computer that loads PS in <1s is extremely difficult. Hit the hot keys almost the exact same time you get the program launched and it should pop up. Took me about 30 tries!

Thanks guys,
Mahdi

Ha ha! That's why I gave you the warning about getting the wrong dialog. The method works well on slow systems, but Adobe will have to implement a new method soon as more people move to faster machines..

Rebuilding the perf is a catch-all cure for many PS ills. You might want to bookmark this page for future reference. That way, you can find the preference file in question and delete it without having to mess with the startup keys.

Thanks again, all looks good - even the problem files that I thought I could never print from. I'm sure this will help at least a few others!
