Asked by: hamdemic

I'm having a big problem installing a printer on a hp pavillion dv2500 running vista ultimate. The thing is that there's no printer option in the control panel. And there is no print spooler service running, it does'nt even show up in the service manager. How can i install the print spooler serivce and get the printer option in the control panel? It's like this vista installation forgot about printers.

Add the "Print Services"  to the Windows Components. Please do the following:

- Open Control Panel
- In the left hand pane choose Classic View
- Double click Programs and Features
- Look in the left hand pane and click on Turn Windows Features on or off
- Once the box is updated you will be able to Add/Remove Windows Components
- Select here the option "Print Services" and hit ok.

Hope it will fix your problem!

Have you tried pressing start, right click any where blank and choose properties
then on start menu tab click custiomise then scroll down to find printers and make sure it is checked then it will be on the start menu for you.

Thanks for the replies... However my problem is more complex then that.

Those things you suggested was the first things I tried. But printers dont show up in the "add/remove windows components". Niether is there an option in the start menu properties. I looked in the system32 folder it seems that all the printer related files are missing, for example i dont even have the printerui.exe or whatever its called also the spool folder is empty. The fact that the printer spool service is not even in the list of windows services is indicating that something is really wrong.

I tried to run a sfc /scannow and it did find some corrupted files but failed to repair them.
There's a larger problem then just a checkbox that needs to be checked. I dont have a vista DVD or i would reinstall.
Does anyone have a clue?

Have you installed vista ultimate yourself or was it on there by default when purchased?
I would say get hold of a vista disk and try and repair the installation or possibly a reinstall (you already have a serial)
But if you purchased the laptop with it preinstalled you should have an image of the current stat (from when you bought it) that you could reinstall from
Make sure you back up data if thinking of reinstalling tho.

Is this a stand alone laptop or have you got it on a network?

I was unable to repair it since i dont have a vista disk. I had to install Xp on the machine and everything is working fine now.
