Question

Setting Default Printer Options on Networked (Active Directory) Printer

Asked by: lflorence

I have set up a printer on a print server.  I am trying to set the default to print in Black and White, and I have chosen that in the options for the printer on the print server, but when I install the printer on a client, It is set to automatic instead of black and white.  Any way to set the default on the print server driver so that it is the default on all clients that install it?

How are you installing the printer to the client? If it's direct to the printer, your description would be expected. If it's through the print server, it should take the defaults set on the print server.

Installing from the print server.  Printer name says print from server name.

I have the printer installed on the print server, the driver set to default to black and white, and I install the printer on the client by going to add a printer, then selecting network printer, then browsing to the printer through active directory.  I'm being told that the local settings override the server settings, but it doesn't even default to black and white, it's on automatic by default.  Basically, I need to know how to centrally manage a printer driver so the settings will be the same on all clients that install the printer.

Installing it the way you describe should do what you want. Where are you "being told that the local settings override the server settings"?

Just by a co-worker.  What I'm seeing is the driver that is installed on the server is set to black and white, but after I install as mentioned above, the driver properties on the client are set to automatic.  I have tested the printing, and it is printing in color if it is a color print even though the driver on the server is set to black and white.

try this
instead of changing the printer preferences on the server by clicking printer preferences on the geral tab, go to the advanced tad and click on Printing Defaults and in there set it to black and white.
This will not change the printing preferences for the printers alrealy added to the client computers, but whwn you add it to a new client it should now Inherit the printing defaults on the server.
please test.

Also on the professional printers, there are brands that supply drivers that allow only black and white printing like for example konica minolta for some models.
If it is a konica minolta let me know the model and I will see if it is available for that model.
