Canon MP180 scan function wont work

hi Experts

i have a Canon MP180 AIO printer, i have never really used the scanning function but i have used the copier function quite a lot, i recently tried to scan a document onto the computer but the scan button on the printer seemed to do nothing. i would press scan and then the blac or colour button but nothing would happen. i tried using the software on the computer to do it but i got an error message saying:

Scan gear
Cannot connect with scanner
scanner driver will be closed

does anyone have any ideas?

you can always test it on another pc, to be sure it's ok
try also if you can scan from Paint>File>import from scanner
