Question

Lexmark Optra Compact Flash

Asked by: tgerbert

I have some Lexmark printers, I believe they are Optra T632's (I'm not sure because they were purchased from a vendor who re-branded them).  I have one Optra T630.  The re-branded T632's have what appears to be a PCI card installed (I think Lexmark calls them ISP's?), which allows for a compact flash card to be inserted into the rear of the printer.  The part number on this "PCI" card reads 11K5453, and Google turns up nothing.

Any idea how I can go about installing such a CF card reader in my T630?

I don't see where that option for connectivity is available for the T630.  Below is the main page for the T630 at Lexmark's website.
http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/product/home/11/0,6970,204816596_653399458_243389451_en,00.html?tabId=1

If you look under the Accessories tab, and scroll down to "Connectivity", there are various ethernet, token ring, wireless, Coax/Twinax, and parallel connectors - but no flash card listed.  Click on the "Specs" tab, and scroll down to "Optional Local Ports" - there are only three optional ports listed:
External Serial Adapter
Internal RS-232C serial
Internal 1284-B Bidirectional Parallel

Even if you could find a PCI card to fit, it appears the T630 is not equipped to be able to print from a flash card - hence no optional flash card connection.

I know it's not the answer you were hoping for, but I don't think you're going to be able to install said reader on that model.

HI michko, thanks for contributing!

I did see that page, and I've actually poured over as many Lexmark documents as I could find that could possibly be relevant.  None of the T630, T632 and T634 specs indicate such an option - but it most definitely exists, I know because I've got a few!

All it says is that under standard ports, there is an internal card slot (into which you can presumably install many different things, one of which is the card I'm looking for).

Always willing to try and help ...

It may be this:

That is about the only Lexmark Smart Card Reader that I'm finding anywhere.  However, if I look at CostCentral and check the compatible models listed, none of the T series models appear.

I do have a call into one of my parts rep resellers - he feels about the same as I do.  He will check with his Lexmark direct rep and see what they can come up with.

I'll post back as soon as I hear from them.

I saw that one too - I do appreciate the help though! ;)

Smart Card is like what's in a sattelite receiver, credit-card like with a small gold square on the surface.  What I'm looking for is Compact Flash, which is the same sort of card as a PCMCIA card you'd stick in the side of a laptop (only half as long), with the connector on the edge.

I cracked open one of our printers to snap some pictures (so you know I'm not crazy!) and I noticed this one seems to have a different part number than the other printer I looked at the other day, 11K4623, but still no luck on Google.

...also, while I was able to find flash cards for the T63x series, they 1) struck me as exorbitantly priced, whereas this seems to be a run-of-the-mill Sandisk $5 flash card and 2) didn't appear to be standard Compact Flash, and my solution hinges on being able to put this thing in a card reader attached to a PC for duplication.

Thanks for clarifying that.  I've passed the info on to my contact, and I'll see what they come back with.

Here is the response I received from my reseller (who checked directly with his Lexmark rep):

"Lexmark is telling me these printers are a couple of generations back and accessories have been discontinued as well.  So, I guess they are telling me we cant get the flash card.  Lexmark direct might have something.  If you want to try them, their number is 800-292-5885."

Give Lexmark Direct a call - they may be able to reference that part number, or find you a compatible card.  Other than that, I'm out of suggestions.

Best of luck.
