Here's the full error message:
Windows cannot connect to the printer. The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI understand there is a technet article on this, however it is in reference to shared printers. My problem is with a LOCAL printer connected via USB.
Windows Vista Business x86 OS and a HP LaserJet 1022.
I tried adding the printer manually and using autodetect as well as the the offered Plug and Play method by HP. Same error message. I double-checked that these were the latest drivers as well as verified the drivers were compatible with Vista.
Thus, we approach the brick wall of troubleshooting. Any tips?

Unfortunately, I do not have a Vista machine available to find out the specific path for you, but if those workarounds I mentioned do not work, you can try going through your Local Security Policy and searching for a NT 4 Drivers section and see if you can remove the block. There's no guarantee that those NT4 drivers are even going to work, though, as a lot of times even XP drivers don't work right on Vista.
Maybe someone else can walk you through finding that specific policy in the Local Policies.
The problem occurred after I had to repair a Spooler Subsystem failure. After reboot, I had to reinstall all of my drivers, and this error came up on the 1022 installation -- however all shared printers installed successfully. In other words, the 1022 NT 4.0 drivers worked at one point, but now nothing. I'm sure it's a local policies issue but I can't find the policy! Arg!
Is the error message a windows error or HP error? Do you see those messages in the event log?
The 1022 is a pain!
This is vista right? If yes.
1- open add remove programs and remove the printer software from there.
2 - un-plug the usb cable
3 - from control panel open printer
4 - in the left pane right click printer and choose "server properties"
5 - click the driver tab and remove the 1022 driver
6 - download latest hp driver and install
Note: Do Not plug the USB cable in until the driver installation ask you to.

Donnie,
Thank you for your response. Yes, it is Vista Business x86. I know the 1022 is a massive pain. I've been wrestling with all 30+ of them in the office. I opted for a centralized Sharp MX-4501N but everyone has tightly kept wallets these days. I am at the whim of my boss.
Onto the problem: I have the latest drivers and have been uninstalling/reinstalling as you specified, yet it comes to the same error. I tried using the HP Universal Print Driver to no avail. I even found a few comparable drivers that didn't work either. The Universal Print Driver installed successfully, but the PC was unable to utilize the printer via these drivers. The comparable drivers I found popped up with the same message. I'm assuming that it is a Local Security Policy issue but I can't seem to figure out which one(s).
I tried to install it using the generic Windows print driver that pops up on the list of manufacturers, too. Surprisingly, the 1022 is indeed on the list, and yet once again, even with the Windows-recommended version, same error.
I think I'm going to try to manually remove it via HKEY_LOCAL_COMPUTER key in the registry as there are still some footprints of the 1022 in the registry even after uninstalling it and see if that works.
Thanks again for everyone's help!

Try the HP Universal Print driver.
