Question

Snow Leopard will not validate a certificate to open PowerTeacher Gradebook

Asked by: SueHauser

I recently updated the MacBooks version 2,1 that the teachers in my school are using from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  After I had updated the computers the PowerTeacher Grade book would not open up for my elementary teachers.  The message that it gives me is " Fialed to validate certificate.  The application will not be executed.
These same teachers can open up their gradebooks on different computers with snow leopard on them.  Although I can use my gradebook on my computer I can't open up mine on these elementary computers.  I don't see any reason for this to happen only to the grade school teachers, on their computers, and not on other computers.
The computer I use was purchased at the same time as the elementary and I don't know of anything different that was done to them.

That's odd if it happened to a whole environment like that.  Could try checking permissions on the root cert (although I don't know why they would have changed, just a sanity check here really) and reinstalling the root certificate chain.

Was this a commercial CA cert, internal CA issued, or self-signed cert?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that app right offhand - is this a browser application?  If so what browser are you using (firefox, other)?  check the browser's cert store under 'signers', 'CA certs', 'Issuers', 'Root Certficates', etc. depending on app.  Compare the thumbprint/fingerprint to make sure it is the same version of the cert as is being served.  Maybe an old cert was there and warnings ignored before as a workaround, and settings got reset by the upgrade or something - pure hypothesis here.

For starters I am not sure that I picked the right zone to post this question.  In most cases we are using firefox as the browser to access this application.  On the computers that this will not work, opening PowerSchool with the Safari browser gets the same results. The application is a student information system and when you start the gradebook off of the PowerSchool  application you open a pop up menu that says.
LaunchGradeBook.jnlp
which is a:  Java Web Start file

What should Firefox do with this file?
The selection that is default is Open with -- Java Web Start

I have checked the permissions on  Java against the permissions on a computer that works.  I couldn't find anything different there.
After that and reading you instruction I am going to tell you I am really lost.  I do not know how to reinstall a root certificate chain..   I have no clue if this is a commercial CA cert, internal CA issued or self-signed. In other words I am way over my head on this one and so far the techs at  PowerSchool are telling us that a) this is not their problem   b)  They do not support PowerSchool on Snow leopard.

I would try some of your suggestions if you would give me more directions on how to do that.

THanks

The problem was solved by going into Java preferences, clicking on the security tab and then opening the keychain access.  Once that screen was opened, I clicked on the NCS (which is the powerschool) application, then clicked on trust and selected Always trust and that took care of my problem.
I have just recently begun to work with Mac's and there is a lot I don't know about them.
Thanks to Paranormastic for the suggestions.
