Question

what does it mean when a printer has WiFi support?

Asked by: GMartin

Hi Everyone;

Recently, I saw an ad for a printer for sale which has WiFi support along with the symbol on the front panel of it.  As I understand it,  I believe this printer will support print jobs sent to it by wireless pc's and wireless laptops.  In other words, this printer can be a local printer (e.g. direct connection to the pc via USB or parallel port) and network printer (e.g. used by wireless pc's or laptops in this scenario).

At any rate, I am just curious if I am on the right train of thought.

Any input given to this post will be appreciated.

        Thank you.

        George

Hi, the printer in this case will have a Wireless network card, so you would be able to set it up anywhere (within range of your wireless router), it would be given an IP address and would then be available to all computers on your wireless network.  It would also be accessible by devices connected by cable to your wireless router.

Hope this helps,
GunnerN

Hi

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.   Perhaps my followup question to this post will seem elementary, but, would I be able to print from this printer with the wireless network card and IP address assigned to it by the router just like a printer without this feature?  Or, will some configuration be necessary for each computer to use the printer?

          Thank you.

Yes, your PC can print directly to this printer. A printer with a wireless card is a networked printer. Hence it has an IP address, and each PC can print directly to it, over the wireless network. Alternatively, you can set it up on a server and have the PCs print via the server.

Note that the printer should be given a fixed IP address, either by setting it manually, or by getting the router to always assign it the same address.

Hi

With regards to the assignment of the IP address, how would that goal be accomplished for the printer?  Should the wireless router automatically assign it one?  If I ever need to reconfigure the IP information of the printer, can I do that within the wireless router configuration?

         Thank you.

The wireless router will assign the printer an IP address, as long as the printer is set to use DHCP - that is normally the default.

The easiest way to give the printer a fixed address is to type its DHCP address into your browser, and give it a different one, well outside the router's normal range.

You can also set up the router to always give the printer the same DHCP address. Type the router's IP address into your browser to do it
