Setting up a parallel Epson receipt printer TM-U220 with XP Pro?

Asked by sondora88 in Printers

I am trying to set up an Epson TM-U220 with a parallel port to work with a PC running XP Pro SP3.

I've installed the drivers per Epson's instructions (using the APD driver software) and setting it up on the (only) parallel port. However, when I get to the stage after installing the driver, after restarting the PC, and plug the printer in, I get no response from the printer whatsoever - it appears to be installed correctly but is "Not Available". The manual tells me at this point the new hardware wizard should pop up but the PC appears to be getting no response at all.

I've tried swapping the cable with no change, I think it must be that I'm doing something wrong in terms of hardware setup as I know so little about parallel connections. I'm using a male to male cable, should it be male to female? If so, will I need to install an expansion bay in order to use it?

Thank you for any help in advance, I'm pulling my hair out here as I know next to nothing about either receipt printers or this type of connection.
