Mapping LPT1 to network printer

I have an XP laptop with an old DOS program called GeneriCAD.

Laptop name is john-laptop

I have a Canon IP100 printer.

I have hooked the printer up via USB, shared the printer as Canon

I run the following command:

net use lpt1 \\john-laptop\canon

I receive the "Completed successfully"  message.

BUT, when I attempt to print to the printer from GeneriCAD via LPT1 I get nothing.

I CAN print a test page via USB but NOT via LPT1

Any thoughts??

Thanks!!

I need a low profile, "Portable" printer that would work.

Any thoughts on which one to use??
The brother HL2250DN and 2270DW are PCL6 printers and would probably work, and they are pretty small for laser printers, although I wouldn't exactly call them portable:

The PJ623, a portable printer that supports ESC/P could also work as that was used by many epson and compatible dot raster printers which were common in the days of DOS.
