Question

USB TO PS/2 mouse converter problems

Asked by: Ray_1

I have two dell Power Edge servers that came with USB mouse ports, but my KVM switch made by Trend Net is PS/2 so is my keyboard and the rest of my servers, so I went to the local Best Buy AND bought two USB TO PS/2 converter.  I shutdown all servers and the KVM switch, plugged in the two USB converters and returned all servers to an Online State.  The two converters and the mouse are not working well together, my mouse is not responding to commands at all, so it's obvious that the communication conversion between USB and PS/2 are having problems.  I was wondering if there was any known drivers that I could download that would help this process or resolve this issue.  I thought about just downloading generic PS/2 drivers to see if that would work? But caution drove me to this email.  Any Help would be greatly appreciated.  "Not a major problem, just an annoyance"

I ran into a similar issue with a KVM. Some new PCs I was working on are USB only and wouldn't accept the KVM connection even with the USB/PS2 converter. I bypassed the KVM and the USB/PS2 converter worked fine. It was an issue with the KVM.

forward compatibility from PS/2 to USB is always a bit horrible.

I'd bite the bullet and get a USB KVM.  imho, the PS/2 ones always gave grief because they weren't hot pluggable, which is the main advantage of USB after all.  Think of it this way, it's probably a 5-10 year investment for any rack, and that's not a lot of money.

RDP and TS will help, but sometimes you just gotta have a local keyboard, as the NIC's gone AWOL.

as a last gasp, ask Trend Net what they recommend.

I had same problem before. Before you buy the USB to PS/2 converter, you sould call your KVM switch producer to ask if the KVM switch will work with USB to PS/2 converter. You have talk to them, most of KVM will not work with any kind of converter.

I use the unusual Maltron keyboard and a trackball, and they document problems with Dell PS2 and USB to PS2 converters.
I have got used to doing
Start, Run, control main.cpl
to bring up the mouse dialogue box, and using arrow keys, <tab> and <space> to navigate around and reset the mouse (features depend on drivers), and at a push turning on mousekeys in the accessibility wizard.

If you use an actual conversion device, you can use the PS/2 to USB converters.  You cannot, however use the simple little adapters that come with some new mice and keyboards, as these actually just repin the connector and the mouse or keyboard notices and works in the alternate mode.
I use a small converter that I purchased from newegg for about $10.

This is where I am at now, I did purchase a USB to PS/2 conversion device and that is what's causing the problem so I thought.  I have since tried to narrow down where the disruption is occurring and have come to the conclusion that it is my KVM box.  I tested the conversion tool by taking the KVM out of the scenario and just testing with a PS/2 mouse and Keyboard and everything worked like it was supposed to work, then I put the KVM back into the scenario and my problem came back.  I am assuming that I am going to have to deal with it for now until they decide to by a new KVM, which will interface with this device or USB in general.  Thank you all for your support in this matter.
