Question

Microsoft, Windows, XP Pro, USB memory stick not recognized

Asked by: mpage

I have a new computer the will not recgonize any memory stick that I plug into any usb port.  It puts the device in the device manager, but it will not set it up so it can be used as a drive.  I have an external seagate 300 gb hard drive that will work, but a memory stick will not.  I tried installing a usb pci adapter in the computer and it did the same thing.

try double clicking on the device itself in device manager and reinstalling driver.. windows does have the driver, but sometimes it needs a little push to use it..

start>run>services.msc

In c:\windows\inf, look for usbstor.inf....
If not, copy from another PC..When you find it, Rt. Click it and select Install....

See if it rebuilds the USB support...

Might also suggest running SFC...

I would start with the System File Checker...

sfc /scannow

You WILL need the XP CD for this to complete...
