apologies for the intrusion. I have a small mp3 player that has died with similar symptoms and I wanted to watch the suggestions you get.
So.... I clicked the 'monitor' button. It now say's 'this q is being monitored' as if I have reported it for bad behaviour or something.

Moderator: If this is what I have done then please remove the monitoring as this wasn't intended.

and sorry mk, perhaps I should just have posted a '<ping>' comment.

you usb section of the player can be bad, since it does not work on different PC's. happens all the time
you can try this :   http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Other-DRIVERS-TOOLS/Others/Sony-EzRecover.shtml

it can be caused by not using the "safe remove" system.

Have you tried the device on other systems?  Different brands?  What brand of computer are you trying it on?  I know from experience that my first USB thumb drive didn't work on my dell but others work fine.

If you're all given up and about to dump the device you could try freezing it

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6035_102-0.html?forumID=7&threadID=281361&messageID=2695069

Mentions it for a hard drive but I'm sure I've heard of it for flash drives as well.

>>As a last resort for ... physically disabled hard drives...
>>I remember reading somewhere about a freezer trick - keeping
>>the drive overnight in a freezer, sometimes, makes it accessible
>>for data recovery. Of course, this does not cure the drive.
>>maqnet.

I have heard of this from several sources and this one does report success but it sounds like a last resort.
Probably seal it in a plastic bag  I would guess but it will still get damp.
