The Solution Rating System

soldering advice for simple adapter cable

I bought one of these to put together:

I've never really soldered anything before, so I need some advice. First, I'm not sure they sent me the right parts. In the picture, they have a chip with eight prongs that goes into a second component that sits between the chip and the board, and has eight holes for the prongs to go into. However the latter piece that they sent me only has seven holes:

how am I supposed to fit eight prongs (left component) into seven holes (right component)? Is that the wrong part?

second, in the above picture, there's a piece at the center bottom with four prongs that is supposed to go into one of those two sets of four holes at the bottom of the board. how do I know which set of holes to solder it into?

from what I read about soldering, I just have to stick all the components in, heat up the pin on the back of the board, and then melt solder onto the hot pin. Is that basically how to do it, or is there anything else I should watch out for?
