Normally scanners come with programming sheets especially symbol scanners.. You can set options like that. with the sheets. It basically sets up the device using bar codes from the manufacturer.

Browse All TopicsI am looking for a particular type of barcode scanner, but I do not know enough about them to know what this feature is called.
Currently we generally use Symbol LS400i scanners for a process we have.

This process involves thousands of repetitive scans for a user to do in one sitting at a workstation. We are attempting to speed up this process a bit. Currently the scanners we use require them to pull the trigger (the light turns on), they focus in on the barcode, it scans and then the light turns off. They then need to grab the next barcoded label and do it again.
My idea is to hang the scanner on a stand pointed down at the table positioned at the perfect focus point. Then hands free from the scanner they pass the label in front of the beam, it registers the scan, and they do it again. Again, the problem is the beam on our scanners does not stay on after it registers a scan.
Our company did own a hand scanner that did do this. Once it detected a label it registers the scan and the beam came back on automatically, but we can't find it. Does any one know of a scanner model that does this. Also, price is a consideration. We don't want to spend over $300 (and would like to go used.)
Thanks

Quite a few of the Symbol scanners offer an optional stand that will do exactly what you want. I'm not sure about the LS400i, and I will check, but with most models you can buy a low-cost stand from Symbol that allows you to mount the scanner in the stand in such a way that the laser fires constantly. With some models you also have to scan in a programming parameter that tells the scanner that it is running in "stand mode"--so it understands what is going on and operates accordingly.

I found a programming sheet/manual for the LS4000 series, but I can't figure out what the option is for a continuous beam when the trigger is pulled down.

Chances are that this Symbol scanner, like many others, needs only the Intellistand, but does not need any programming setup, because the stand is built to simply keep the trigger depressed at all times. Thus, the scanner fires the laser constantly, "thinking" that someone is holding the trigger. And that's all there is to it.
According to tech support at Symbol's largest distributor, you need the stand in the link below, which is designed to depress the trigger any time the scanner is mounted in the stand, thus keeping firing at all times:

I can't speak to this exact model, but for the ones that I've used all that's needed is the Intelllistand. You're right. if you just depress the switch the light turns off after a few seconds. The Intellistand doesn't really work by just or only depressing the switch. There's something else in the stand.. a magnet or something that makes the beam stay on all of the time... we've not had to do any special programming in order to get it to work... you just put it in the stand.
We have literally dozens and dozens of Symbol scanners in our environment all using the Intellistand.
That's exactly what I was told just now by Symbol tech support. He he said that while he did not feel like it would work properly with a rubber band, he said that the Intellistand interacts with the LS4000i via a magnet, making it fire continuously with brief pauses, so that it will continue to read one bar code after another.

Check with your VAR... we've bought Intellistands from Symbol for all of the models that we use and they work really well. We place the scanners in these stands and the light is on all the time.
