The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

HP Twain conflict with Caere Scan manager

Asked by rogerb in Computer Scanners by HP

This may be a Caere question, but it seems to be a specific conflict with HP, and I have installed Caere's HP patch--but still, no go.  So, I thought I'd attack it from the end of the scanner, as well as from the software end.

Prior to today, I was successfully running Omniform 2.01 and Omnipage Pro 8.0.  I was using Scan Manager 3.0 (the default install with Omnipage Pro 8), and everything worked beautifully.

I was--and still am --using an HP Scanjet IIcx.  I run Win98 and so I had to upgrade to a new Adaptec SCSI card in order for my computer to communicate properly with the scanner.  Again, no problems--I've had this computer since Nov. 1999 --which is when I did the SCSI and HP software upgrades--and all Caere scanning has been perfect.  I also purchased and installed HP's new drivers (version 2.8)--which were also required for win98 communication.  Again, everything worked perfectly until today's install of Omniform 4.0

After installation of Omniform 4.0, Omniform 4.0 works, all 'regular' scanning works, but Omnipage Pro says it cannot successfully communicate with my scanning software.  I have installed and uninstalled everything--the scanning software (which was--and is--current--I just checked the HP website), Omniform 4, and Omnipage 8.  I have also tried running Omnipage with three different scan mangers:  the default 3.0 (which it USED to work with), the 4.1 (installed by Omniform 4.0), and the new download of Scan Manager 5.0.  All the same problem--Omnipage cannot find my scanner.

I also tried the FAQ of deselecting the auto setting, so that I can select the Twain setting when Omniform starts.  No change--but, if this is a clue--I do NOT get an option to select my scanner (which is properly listed, though--by the way)--I simply receive the same error message.  The only other clue I can offer;  if I run HP's scanner test independently--not when I get the error message from Omnipage--but instead straight from the HP program options, the scanner passes.  But if I try to run the same test--which is suggested by the software--when Omnipage pro will not work--the  HP test just 'sits there' and does nothing.

Again, everything and all scanning works, other than Omnipage--which--to reiterate--worked earlier today.

I am a fairly advanced user, but I'm about at wit's end.
