Does anyone know where I can download the software for the 5100c model.
I bought a new computer and do not have my old software. Is there a way around the software issue so I can use the scanner!

Which O/S are you using?
If it's XP or Win2k, I'd recommend using the sj5200c software instead. That software works fine with the sj5100c, although it technically isn't "supported" by HP.
Get that driver here:

Just type in the scanner model name (sj5200c) in the text box and hit enter. Go to the Windows XP hyper-link and you can either order the software or download it from there.

Ooops.
One thing: The sj5200c is virtually identical to the sj5100c, except for one thing: The sj5200c has USB and the sj5100 is only parallel.
When installing the 5200c software, make sure you select the parallel drivers when you get to that section of the install. USB won't do you any good, because the 5100c is only parallel.

Downloaded sj5200c driver (sj662en.exe) from HP and loaded it. Bounced the system and plugged in the scanner during POST. DM recognizes the device as HP C5190A 3740 but it is banged. Reloading the driver from default install point (c:\sj662)does not help…Am I missing something here? Have I entered into DLL Hell?

You should have turned the system off and plugged the scanner in while the system was off, the scanner may not be properly initialized if it's only found after POST: parallel isn't truly plug and play like USB.
I would remove the device from Device manager and shut down. Upon rebooting try it again.

I'm not sure what else to tell you...
It could be that the system is using the Microsoft driver for the scanner (hpscanjet.inf) instead of the one provided on the download. You could try removing the device from device manager, deleting that file (it will be replaced if you ever need it again by the OS), empty your recycle bin and then reboot and see if it will be found properly.
The downloaded driver was not submitted for Microsoft hardware certification (the driver file isn't digitally signed), so depending on how your system is set up it may not let you install the driver, but I'm not really familiar with how to troubleshoot that.
Also, this could simply be a cabling problem. Have you double-checked that your cable is attached securely on both ends? (The best way to do that is to completely disconnect and then reconnect the cable.)
I hope one of these suggestions helps, but I'm not sure there is anything else I can suggest.
