Question

Running XP Pro with HP5300c Scanner using USB connection. CConfigDestEnumerator halts looking for possible destinations.

Asked by: jumpshooter

Running XP Pro with HP5300c Scanner using USB connection. Was working fine then stopped working. Microsoft XP news group says that scanners attached to USB ports have been reported failing like this. Their only advice was to disallow the powering down of the USB port when XP decides it is possible. I made the change and it still died. Uninstalled Scanner software and also the USB. Re-installed software, re-connected scanner to USB port, powered-up. Upgraded Scanner Driver w/correct HP-provided XP-patch. "All Systems Are Go" yet the scanner continues to hang with this message in the scanner error log:

CConfigDestEnumerator|Line 0|Sys 9|looking for:
C:\PROGRAM~1\MICROS~2\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE

The file it is looking for is the OUTLOOK executable and it is in the Directory shown. It finds the OUTLOOK EXPRESS executable which makes the same call with a different target Directory.

If I uninstall the Small Business product containing OUTLOOK, the process then hangs on \WINDOWS\MSPAINT.EXE. If the Small Business
is re-installed, the problem as described returns.

I double-checked that I am using HP's approved XP-Driver patch 3.04 and it is the right one. This is worth, a minimum, of 250 points.

Interestingly, the Scanner works fine when invoked using the SCANNER and CAMERA WIZARD. The 5300c warms up and scans the photo as it should. It's unfortunate there isn't a SCANNER WIZARD.

Found a related WINDOWS 2000 solution which does NOT solve my problem. Member COYOTE says that when the START MENU had its reference
to MYCOMPUTER removed, that the problem went away. I never had MYCOMPUTER in my START MENU and still suffer the problem. It can be
found by searching with CConfigDestEnumerator in the HP Scanners TOPIC.

Some ideas and questions...

What type of computer do you have manufacturer & model please ?

What type of printer do you have (manufacturer & Model please ?

Are you directly connected to your USB ports or are you using a USB Hub ?

Are you trying to scan by going to start programs, hp precision scan, hp precision scan or how ?

When you installed this new driver and when you initially installed this software Did you or do you have full rights as administrator if not then it probably will not install properly. Secondly when you first installed this and you installed the updates did you have your other programs shut down such as anti virus software etc... or were they running at the time ? if you have norton for example and did not go to start programs norton anti virus, Options unchecked load auto protect at startup and enable auto protect.. If you did not do this chances are the installation is corrupted. Anti viruses can corrupt installations very badly.

Another thought what exatcly did you mean by this statement "The file it is looking for is the OUTLOOK executable and it is in the Directory shown. It finds the OUTLOOK EXPRESS executable which makes the same call with a (((((different target Directory)))))." ??? do you mean that you did not install Microsoft Office in its default directory and it is on a seperate drive or different folder ? Or do you mean that what the HP precision scan is saying that the folder that outlook should be in is different ?

It sounds as if it is getting hung up on the scan to option in Precision Scan...

the CConfig part of the message above is a programming call to check configuration...this is a very common call tag for devices that attach to systems if they need to check for other programs this is why I think that it is getting hung up in the HP precision scan, scan to option. It is checking for those programs and failing them.

try this in outlook just to see if it makes a difference

HP PrecisionScan uses Simple MAPI to communicate with Outlook Express.  To successfully send your scan to Outlook Express versions prior to 5.0 as a destination in the Scan To drop-down, you need to set up Outlook Express to be the default Simple MAPI client.  From within Outlook Express, select the Tools\Options menu.  On the General tab, make sure the following checkboxes are checked:
*      Make Outlook Express my default e-mail program
*      Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client

In the Window Device Manager, the HP Scanjet scanner may not display or it may display in any of the following ways:
As the Scanjet model number under the Imaging Devices category.
As an Unknown Device under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category.
As an Other Device under the Other Devices category.
As the Scanjet model number with an "!", or "?" under the Imaging Devices category.
NOTE: Microsoft(R) Windows NT 4.0 does not support USB. Therefore, no information about Windows NT 4.0 is available in this documentation. Only the HP Scanjet 5200 4100c and 6200c series scanners support USB in Windows 95 with most current service releases (Version 1214 or above).

Before beginning

Print this document for easy reference. This document contains many steps. Some of these steps require restarting the computer system.
Have the HP Scanjet scanning software installation CD or a current downloaded version of the HP Scanning software available.
Solution

Follow the steps below in order. If an instruction in sequence does not pertain to the version of the Windows operating system in use, then skip ahead to the next step that applies.

Step 1: Verify physical connections and system resources

Step 1a: Check the electrical connections
Reset the scanner by disconnecting the power cord to scanner, waiting 60 seconds, and then reconnecting the power.
Connect the scanner using a different power outlet.
Try scanning again.
Step 1b: Check the USB connections
It is very common for the USB cable to be inserted upside down; therefore, it is very important that the cable be checked for correct orientation.

Verify that the USB cable is plugged in correctly to the scanner with the USB symbol face up.
Connect the scanner directly to the computer.
If connecting the scanner to a USB port on a docking station or port replicator for a laptop computer, connect the scanner directly to the USB port on the laptop computer.
If connecting the scanner to a powered or an un-powered USB hub, remove the hub and connect the scanner directly to a USB port on the computer.
Connect the scanner to a different USB port on the computer. If possible, connect the USB cable to a USB port on the opposite side of the computer. For example, move the USB cable from the USB ports on the front of the computer to the USB ports on the back of the computer.
Remove all USB devices from the computer except devices like USB mice and keyboards.
Try scanning again.
Step 1c: Verify the minimum system resources are met
Verify that the computer meets the minimum system requirements listed on the scanner box.
Temporarily disable all software or programs that automatically start when the Windows operating system is started. Click here for instructions on disabling startup items .
Check the Device Manager for an Error Code 19 status. Click here for instructions on checking error code status in the Device Manager .
Try scanning again.
If the scanning software still fails to work correctly, complete the rest of the steps in this document before attempting to scan again.
If the scanning software works correctly, re-enable the startup group items. Click here for instructions on enabling the startup items .
Step 1d: Check for common communication problems
Check the HP Director for other scanner references; try scanning with each different reference. See Figure 1 for an example of multiple scanner references in HP Director.
Figure 1: Multiple scanner references HP Director

Check the Device Manager for an Error Code 19 status. Click here for instructions on checking error code status in the Device Manager.
If the Scanjet is a 5200c, 6200c, or 6300c Series scanner, click here for instructions if the scanner quits working when it is plug and played by Windows and is not detected or is detected as an unknown device . If this does not correct the issue, continue with this document.

HP Scanjet Scanners - Multiple USB Issues Including the Use of Hubs

Introduction
Reference the following document for information about issues/solutions with some specific makes and models of USB Hubs. Under most circumstances, it is not recommended to use a hub. When switching USB ports, shut down the PC before disconnecting the HP Scanjet scanner.

Digital Research Technology
ISSUE: The HP Scanjet scanner will not respond or scan multiple times when attached to the Digital Research Technology hub.

SOLUTION: Attach the HP Scanjet scanner directly to the USB port.

Belkin USB hub
ISSUE: HP Scanjet scanner is not responding when connected to Belkin USB hub. Two issues have been observed with Belkin hubs:

The power adapter does not supply enough power for the hub to be able to support four full bus-powered devices.
The hub always reports itself as a self-powered device, even when being used as a bus-powered device.
SOLUTION: If you always use the power adapter, you will avoid having the hub always report to itself as a self-powered device. If there are four devices plugged into the hub, there may be intermittent problems.

ISSUE: HP Scanjet scanner not responding when connected to CATC USB Bus-Powered hub.

SOLUTION: These hubs sometimes fail with low-speed devices such as keyboards, mice and joysticks. The solution is to use only self-powered devices.

Unixtar USB hub
ISSUE: HP Scanjet scanner not responding on Unixtar USB hub.

SOLUTION: The hub always reports itself as a self-powered device, even when being used as a bus-powered device. For the hub to work correctly, always use the power adapter.

USB keyboard with hub
ISSUE: HP Scanjet scanner not responding on computer that also has USB keyboard with hub.

SOLUTION: The hub on the Samsung USB keyboard does not always identify itself correctly. When it identifies itself as a self-powered device, it confuses the operating system, causing odd behavior with the hub portion of the keyboard. There is no workaround. Use low-powered USB devices such as mouse and gaming devices, or self-powered devices with this keyboard.

Rev 04 CMD USB
ISSUE: After upgrading the machine and having a PCI add-in USB host controller from CMD, the following string may appear in Device Manager:
Rev 04 CMD USB controller not supported by Microsoft(R).

CAUSE: Microsoft does not support this device. Contact CMD about getting a filter driver that should enable the machine to work.

General USB issues
ISSUE: If connecting a USB device to a Windows 98 PC while the PC is in Standby mode, the PC does not resume from Standby to process the USB device connection and recognize the new USB device. The computer remains in Standby mode, and may not recognize the USB device one it resumes.

SOLUTION: If you disconnect, then reconnect the USB device after the computer has resumed the USB device will be correctly recognized. However, Windows will fail to add USB devices if they are attached, while the PC is in Standby mode.

SUMMARY: Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 98. Contact Microsoft for assistance.

ISSUE: HP Scanjet scanner is not detected in Windows 98.

SOLUTION: Verify that the USB port is functioning properly by running the file USBVIEW.EXE, contained in the tools\reskit\diagnose directory on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

ISSUE: HP Scanjet scanner hangs in the middle of the scan.

SOLUTION: Contact the PC vendor for assistance or install a PCI USB interface card.

CAUSE: The USB manager is not recognizing the NEC chip set.

ISSUE: I need more information.

SOLUTION: For all HP Scanjet scanners using a USB connection, verify USB functionality and connectivity and check for any USB chipset controller issues. For detailed instructions on verifying functionality, refer to the document BPS03033 - Verifying Connectivity and USB Functionality. To check the computer for USB chipset controller issues, refer to the document BPS03767 - USB Chip Set Issues and Information. A list of known Windows USB issues may be found on Microsoft's Web page .

Brian, amazing response. I'll probably end up paying you more than 250 for that type of effort. Please be patient.
HP Customer Service sent me instructions that involved
uninstalling everything and then REGEDITing to delete any
related problem records. When I finished, the same symptom
remained. To be sure, I executed the steps once more and
it failed again. Then your response occurred. I read the
section about Norton causing corruption so I shut down
everything including the SBC DSL Monitoring software.
When I was doing the REGEDITing again, I noticed that there
was a stray entry from when I had installed a credit card
reader from FLEET. I had uninstalled the software but the
Registry entry was left behind. I figured that this must
be it. Well, the deletion was correct. The Registry now
has 2 USB devices - my NOMAD3 MP3 Player and the 5300C.
When I reconnected everything and  made the last boot,
I got a error during the boot process. "HP Scanning Software Setup fatal error. Setup is unable to continue.".
It gets worse. Now there is a conflict between the 5300C
and the SBC DSL Configuration. SBC's software detects and
repairs the problem but the Scanner is left non-functional.
Otherwise than this problem, my DELL Pentium 3 800LR with
512K memory is fine. I need a better video card. Answers
to your questions: I made EXPRESS the default client but
the HPPRSCAN.EXE still hangs on the OUTLOOK.EXE call.
The hang occurs whether it's invoked directly using
the File Explorer, a desktop shortcut or from the menu.
I had already found the HP suggestion to toggle off the
feature to let the machine shutdown power. HP has sent me
another solution and I want to deal with your stuff so
please help others until I am convinced I can go no farther. Thanks for the effort, Brian.

Okay so it looks like you got a step further but took a step back also... So it looks like there may be multiple things here conflicting causing the end result...

The SBC DSL Configuration I am not familiar with what exactly is this ? it is an external modem device a NIC card or what not and where does it show the conflict (i.e. device manager ? etc... )

Also you did not mention if are you running the Scanner direct to the computers USB port or are you running through another device such as the keyboard or a hub ?

What exactly is the SBC software saying for the error (i.e. what files etc... is it referencing to ? )

You mentioned you had a credit card reader also I am assuming this was connected to your PC to make a POS type system ... was this reader connected USB, Serial or what not ? also did it use existing hardware in your computer such as your modem card etc.. ? credit card readers are notorius for taking over whatever port they are put on including home telephone lines I troubleshooted these often when I supported multifunction fax machines. Credit Card readers will interrupt fax machines if on the same telephone line and also modems inside PC's if it is a reader that uses your pc's modem it can lockup the modem constantly not allowing anything else to pass through.

Go to start, run type in SYSEDIT (i believe that works in windows xp) if not then start, run, MSCONFIG go to the win.ini and check under TWAIN the TWAIN statement should read something like this

Default Source=C:\WINDOWS\Twain_32\hpprscan.ds

Another Idea has come about also.... At any point did you have any other USB based devices that were printers or scanner or multifunction machines other then the one you have now ?

When you say you made outlook express the default client but it still hangs the one very important question is , is outlook express and the rest of microsoft office installed in the default directory or did you install it on a partioned drive, a seperate hard drive or different directory ?    the reason I ask this is the scanner software is not built intelligently in other words it does not really look for outlook express ms word etc. outside of the default directories they are in.

Get back to me as soon as you can with responses to the above questions and I may be able to look further... I had come across some articles the other day regarding certain DSL modems and also certain Dell model computers having incompatiblility issues. I am going to research this tonight and try to get back to you on this late tonight

by: briancassinPosted on 2003-05-15 at 22:53:01ID: 8538456

here is what I found specifically for DELL computers according to the model number you gave me which was an "800 LR" Dell does not come up with anything however an 800 series model is a lattitude notebook is this what you have or is it a desktop model ? I gave you a lot of information to go through below but if this is a notebook pc then power could very well be a problem and it could be a combination of things (which I am pretty positive it is) as to your current situation. One of the thoughts I had was that if the device is failing to intialize is it because the communication is failing going back and forth when it is doing what I would consider "heavy requests" going between microsoft programs and it's interfacing software ? I could hypothesize that possibly this draws more power thereby weakening the connection and eventually rendering useless. You did mention it did work through scanners and cameras in windows itself this is a basic Use all scanner function which will work with all scanners yes their is two way communication but it is much less because everything is microsoft controlled to scanner using a microsoft based scanner driver... therefore scanners & cameras goes to scanner vs. Scanner to HP software to Operating System back to scanner back to HP software back to O.S.... Or it could also be driver / hardware conflicts.

I would try this Go into your BIOS BUT BE CAREFUL only to change the settings I tell you to DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHERS because it could have adverse effects...

WHen you boot up the prompt saying hit this key to enter setup should come up I believe on DELL computers it is the DELETE key... Press that key go into power management and completely disable all power management... Save the changes exit and reboot, once in windows Go to start, settings, control panel and go to "Power Options" put to always on scheme make sure everything is set to never if you have hibernate make sure that is off too hit apply then OK if it prompts you to reboot go ahead and do so...Also In addition if you have any other USB devices connected I would disconnect them (when the power is off to the PC)Also temporarily Close down any Status monitors etc... that runs the other USB devices do not uninstall the programs. Obviously if after we do all this it will do two things

1. Tell us if it is a power problem

2. Tell us if any other USB devices are interferring.

I checked HP's Website the 5300c is listed as compatible with Windows XP but you do have to download drivers for it I am ASSUMING YOU HAVE THE MOST RECENT DRIVERS IF NOT DOWNLOAD THE MOST CURRENT ONES AND SEE THE PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLING THEM I BELIEVE IT IS A FULL DOWNLOAD WHICH MEANS UNINSTALL OLD DRIVERS COMPLETELY.

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml;jsessionid=DZDO1TMSPWFWLQEXGR3UNZQ?reg=nam&cc=us&docName=bps05342&lc=en

Dell has stated in Dell knowledge base document FA1021802 , that a USB device such as a scanner or printer may not be detected or function correctly when connected to the USB port of a Dell Latitude or Inspiron PC (it may occur on other models as well).

Symptom
Various communication errors may occur, including initialization and scanner not found errors.

Cause
USB devices normally obtain some power from the USB ports of the PC. Some Dell computers do not provide enough voltage from the USB ports to power some USB devices.

Solution
If any USB device is not found or communications problems exist, then Dell recommends purchasing a powered USB hub to provide the USB devices with enough power to operate correctly. Using an available USB port from a USB keyboard can worsen this problem.

Troubleshooting Universal Serial Bus (USB) Devices

Overview

Problems with USB devices can be solved by examining:

What makes USB fail?
The Components:
The Device
The Driver
The Cable
The Root Hub Configuration
NOTE: This article does not cover every possible issue that can go wrong with your USB Device. Other possibilities may exist that are not covered in this article. Please see Additional Information to view other possible solutions.

Additional Information
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What makes USB fail?
There are 3 possible reasons why a USB device will fail to operate:

Bad or incompatible hardware (the device itself)
Bad or missing device drivers (software controls the devices)
Mismatched cabling (wrong type of cable)
To determine the nature of the problem answer the following questions:

If this is a portable, is the AC adapter plugged in?
If yes continue; if no, plug it in.

If there is another USB port, does the device work there?
If yes, the problem is a port issue.

Does the USB device work on another computer?
If yes, the problem is a driver issue.

Does another USB device work on this computer?
If yes, the problem is a device issue.

Is the USB device connected directly to the computer or does it connect first to a hub or to another USB device?
If yes, connect the device directly into the port.

Did the device come with its own cable?
If no, then check the cable.

If the device plugs in, works on another computer, and is not detected by the operating system, check the Root Hub Configuration.

The Device

Power Limitations

USB devices may draw a maximum of 500 milliamps (mA) and a minimum of 50 milliamps (mA) per connection.
If a device attempts to draw more than this, the port that the device was plugged into will be disabled until the system power is cycled off and on (this is called "suspending" the port).
If the device draws less than 50 milliamps (mA), the port will fail to recognize the device and not become active.

Common indicators of a power limitation will be:
The device works fine if plugged into a powered external USB HUB.
Other devices work fine until one additional device is added, then nothing works.
Solving Power Limitations:

Check with the manufacturer for updated software for the device.
If your device exceeds power limits, make sure that it did not come with an AC adapter to supply the additional power.
Purchase a Self-Powered USB Hub
The USB specification allows up to five external hubs to be connected in a chain.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Driver

When a USB device is plugged in, it should be loaded and configured without ever requesting a device driver.

NOTE:  The fact that a device works in the Microsoft. Windows. 95 or Windows 98 operating systems does not mean that it works with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Some devices may not have drivers for other versions of Windows. Check with your manufacturer for more information.

Checking to see if the Driver Loads

If a prompt for a device driver appears when you connect the device, check with the manufacturer of that device to determine if a driver is available.

If the device does not ask for a driver and does not work, then check in Device Manager for more information.

Check for duplicates of the device. If you see duplicates of a device, verify that you have the most up-to-date firmware for that device.

Check for a second device for which there appears to be no driver. These are marked by question marks or exclamation points in Device Manager

If your device has drivers and continues to add unknown devices or duplicate devices, check with the manufacturer for software updates.

IMPORTANT:

BECAUSE I AM NOT SURE IF THE DRIVERS YOU HAVE ARE DESIGNED FOR WINDOWS XP THIS MAY BE SOMETHING TO TRY ALSO

Getting older programs to run on Windows XPMost programs run properly on Windows XP. The exceptions are some older games and other programs that were written specifically for an earlier version of Windows. To run your program on Windows XP, try the following:

Run the Program Compatibility Wizard. As an alternative, you can set the compatibility properties manually.
Update your program, drivers, or hardware.
These options are covered in detail below.

The Program Compatibility Wizard
This wizard prompts you to test your program in different modes (environments) and with various settings. For example, if the program was originally designed to run on Windows 95, set the compatibility mode to Windows 95 and try running your program again. If successful, the program will start in that mode each time. The wizard also allows you to try different settings, such as switching the display to 256 colors and the screen resolution to 640 x 480 pixels.

If compatibility problems prevent you from installing a program on Windows XP, run the Program Compatibility Wizard on the setup file for the program. The file may be called Setup.exe or something similar, and is probably located on the Installation disc for the program.

To run the Program Compatibility Wizard
Start the Program Compatibility Wizard
Follow the instructions in the wizard.
 Note

To start the Program Compatibility Wizard, click Start, click Help and Support, click Find compatible hardware and software for Windows XP, and then, under See Also in the navigation pane, click Program Compatibility Wizard.
Set the compatibility properties manually
As an alternative to running the Program Compatibility Wizard, you can set the compatibility properties for a program manually. The settings are the same as the options in the Program Compatibility Wizard.

To set the compatibility properties for a program manually
Right-click the program icon on your desktop or the shortcut on the Start menu for the program you want to run, and then click Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab, and change the compatibility settings for your program.
 Note

The Compatibility tab is only available for programs installed on your hard drive. Although you can run the Program Compatibility Wizard on programs or setup files on a CD-ROM or floppy disk, your changes will not remain in effect after you close the program.
For more information about an option on the Compatibility tab, right-click the option and then click What's This.
Update your program or drivers
If your program does not run correctly after testing it with the Program Compatibility Wizard, check the Web for updates or other fixes, as follows:

Check the Web site of the program's manufacturer to see if an update or patch is available.
Check Windows Update to see if a fix is available for the program. Click Home on the menu bar of Help and Support Center, then click Windows Update in the right pane.
If the program is a game that uses DirectX, ensure that you are using the latest version of DirectX. In addition, check the Web site of the manufacturer of your video card or sound card to see if newer drivers are available for either of them.

THIS MAY BE USEFUL

To link a program to a digital camera event
Right-click the camera, and then click Properties.
On the Events tab, in Select an event, click the event for which you want to initiate an action.
In Actions, click one of the following options:
Start this program: Select the program you want to start when the event occurs.
Prompt for which program to run: Select to be prompted to choose a program when the event occurs.
Take no action: When the selected event occurs, nothing will be started.
Save all pictures to this folder: All the pictures you select will be saved to the folder you specify when the event occurs. To search for a specific folder or drive, click Browse.
Click OK.
 Note

To open Scanners and Cameras, click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Scanners and Cameras.
If the Events tab is not displayed, this feature is not available for the selected device.
Some programs do not support linking to digital cameras. Linking is available only with the programs that appear in Start this program.
You must have a camera installed and connected to your computer to view properties

TO TEST BY YOUR SCANNER by windows alone DO THE FOLLOWING

To test a scanner or digital camera
Right-click the scanner or camera you want to test, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, depending on which device you are testing, click Test Scanner or Test Camera.
 Note

To open Scanners and Cameras, click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Scanners and Cameras.
A message will tell you if the scanner or camera completed the test successfully.
You must have a camera or scanner installed and connected to your computer to view properties.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I KNOW THIS IS INFORMATION OVERLOAD PROBABLY!!!!!  Usually I do not post this much information but I did say I would research it and I am providing all the information I can find on this subject to weed out certainties with uncertainties... Also from your post you seem to have a very technical know how on computers..

LET ME KNOW if this is a notebook even if it is not I would still try the power management idea... power management can cause a lot of headaches with USB ports, Parallel ports etc... One final thought what version USB card do you have in your system 1.0 1.1 2.0 ? and How old is the PC ? just wondering if maybe a USB upgrade driver is in order for your PC I doubt it but if the PC is at least 1 year old and never had anything upgraded on the USB port then it may need it.

When you review the last post Please try to answer the questions.... I only post this note because I know i hit you with a lot of information.

Brian provided a huge body of knowledge on Scanner idiosyncrasies and USB data, also. Since I have already
spent more time on this problem than it deserves, I will
hang the Scanner off my Notebook.

The modulo(s, of course, will handle this as they see fit.
Should I spend some Saturday on the problem and I go to
solution, I can post the solution using some existing
protocol, I imagine.

by: briancassinPosted on 2003-05-16 at 07:57:15ID: 8540765

Jumpshooter,

I appreciate it but if what I posted did not fix your problem then I really did not give you a solution, therefore I shouldn't get the points.

I do want to fix your problem (if possible) since I now know it is a notebook the power solution above I would try first and foremost and have the laptop plugged direct into the wall do not run from battery it will only cause more power problems.

Since this scanner did work at one point I would also think about what changed when it stopped working... Did you add another device to your USB ports ? did you install new software ? Did you change anything in your system ?

It is up to you, I am sure you are sick of dealing with this problem... if you do not wish to continue trying to troubleshoot it that is okay I know how fustrated you must be.

Hi, again, Brian. I don't care about the points. I bought
the subscription because this Site is a great idea. I think
I get some monthly point total that will be more than I will ever need. Yes, you are right when you say I am sick of this problem. I find it rather amazing that HP can suggest that you pay them $25 an hour for a problem with
a peripheral I bought from them. I also own an HP1100 Printer - which continues to function thru all of this.
I'll paste in my System Information:

I installed the SBC DSL Monitor on 4/25
I installed the XP Service Pack 1 on about 5/1

I have too many things in my Life, Brian, that need to be
done, also. At least, this will provide you with some
environmental data.

I've decided to re-format and re-install everything.
Again, thanks for the help but I might kill someone if
I have to deal with this situation anymore.

You're going to have to let me go. I think you deserve
the 500 for education me on issues I was unaware of.
I had never had any trouble with USB(s) before. Plug and
Play and no problemo.

Good luck, Brian. By the time you respond again, my Desktop
will have been destroyed by formatting. I think that's the
only completely reliable action. I can do that faster than
I can doing this. This is the kind of problem teenagers
should work on, though. Provided them with a 1-generation
old box and turn them loose on a crash-and-burn machine.

OK, take the points, Brian. I am certain that you could
eventually get the box to a point where the scanner
works. The problem is that there can be other registry
problems that are lurking in the background. I am going
to rehabilitate it to a great condition.

Sounds good sorry I could not get you faster firmer fix..
It is not fair that H.P. charges for tech support they do this because some people never bother to read their manuals and take 2 hours to explain how to get into the add printer wizard also it comes down to their online support not being the best it could be. Plain and simple they have skeletons just like every other company and certain problems they will never admit that their product is faulty. I know I worked for one of their major competitors 3 - 4 years ago and they ended up going belly up because they did not want to fix the problems right software was bad the hardware was bad a boatload of problems I do agree with you though if you have to get work done you don't have time to wait for HP tech support or to fool around with half a dozen things here to get it resolved.

Thanks Again

I have a new XP Pro system with a USB connected HP 4200C scanner. I solved the problem by turning off the Power Management function for the root hub slots in Device Manager. I found that little piece of information in this discussion and it worked for me. Prior to that, I was ready to toss the scanner out of the window. It seemed sporatic if I did get it to run, but I suspect that it was shutting down the power to the scanner port and couldn't get it to power back when you ask for the scanner.

This seems to be an XP Pro special.

Cheers.

a small comment:
i have a 5300C, it worked fine with driver 3.03.
one day i thought i would check if they had a new version of the driver that might have some GUI improvements with the interface (which could do with some improvements) - i found they had driver 3.04

i installed it and then everything went haywire.
i got the famous:
"HP Scanning Software Setup fatal error. Setup is unable to continue."

so i started looking on the net and reading this huge post... while reading it i thought i might try to downgrade back to 3.03 - and about half way through reading this post i finished installing he original 3.03 from CDs that i had - guess what ? everything started working fine !

I hope this helps people too.
