Question

Why does my scanner not work?

Asked by: DoctorK12008

I use PaperPort 11 with 2 scanners.   One is a Visioneer Strobe XP 200 which works fine.   The other is an HP Scanjet 7400c.   I open PapertPort and try to use the HP scanner, but I get an error message as seen in the attached file.   Htis problem only started in the past few days, both scanners have worked normally for several months.

The quickest path to solve the problem is to reinstall your scanner software. You can also check in Task Manager if there's PrecisionScan process (probably "hpmdlbwx.exe"). If not run 'msconfig' tool and check if it's included in startup list.

I reinstalled the scanner software.   This did not solve the problem.   The other scanner works fine, and both worked perfectly until recently.   I need to use both scanners, as one is used for multiple page letter-sized documents, while the other (the Visioneer) is used to scan business cards and credit card slips.

I assume that your device is connected via USB so try another USB socket. If it's connected via SCSI than check controller's state. It this won't work you can try to replace Scanner->PC cable. If this won't work then I guess something's wrong with your scanner. Connect the device to another computer and see if it works.

It is connected to a USB port.   I tried connecting it to a different USB port with the same result.   Both ports are on the computer itself.   I used a different cable also.   I set up the scanner on another computer and it worked perfectly.

Try to disable firewall. Did you completely uninstall scanner software before new instalation?

by: DoctorK12008Posted on 2009-08-09 at 11:08:33ID: 25055192

As far as I know, I completely uninstalled the software.   It looked like a new installation when I did the reinstall.   I am not sure what the firewall has to do with it, as it is attached to the computer directly.   In any case, I have made no changes there.   The other computer I tried it on has exactly the same firewall setup and it worked fine on that computer.

Error message is saying that TWAIN driver cannot communicate with Precisionscan software. Some firewalls prevent applications from communicating at all. Therefor I insist that that you disable firewall temporary before running Precisonscan. There's little chance for success but It won't take much time and could save some.

If still no luck try this procedure:

The firewall is disabled.   I followed the procedure in the link for uninstalling then reinstalling Precisionscan.   I still get the same error message, so we are no further forward.   Is it possible there is some problem having the Visioneer scanner as well as the HP installed?   They both worked fine in the past, however.

It's possible. Apparently the problem is not hardware or Precisionscan but TWAIN driver which is used by another device. So try to uninstall both scanners and make sure you got rid of TWAIN driver. Then uinstall HP first and see if it works. Additionally look for some related errors in Application Logs (right click My Computer -> Manage)
