How to change default paper size for WIA scanner drivers

Is there a way to change the default paper size for WIA compliant scanners FROM letter TO A4 in Windows XP?

Ive googled and various newgroup sites say its not possible but I cant believe thats true. I would use the TWAIN drivers for the Scanjet 7800 scanners weve spent a bucket on, but the drivers appear to be less use than a chocolate teapot and regularly crash. WIA seems far more solid but has this annoying feature of setting the default papersize to LETTER and the user has to change it each time. Not a prob really but prone to user-based-issues.

Any suggestions ?
