Fax copy too light

When I send a fax using the HP LJ3055 Fax printer, the copy on the screen and the cover page are received fine, but the pages in the document tray come out so light as to be illegible on the receiving end.

If I print out the document on paper, and then send everything through the document tray, it looks fine.

My problem only happens when I have a combination of on-screen pages and pages to scan.

Is there a setting somewhere I can tweak to fix this? I find nothing in the Toolbox or the help files.
