Yes, that was my first thought and I reinstalled both, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. My tidy up was simply some extended housekeeping, mainly of data files. Thanks for the thought

Browse All TopicsI have a Canon Ixus V and a Lexmark X83 Printer/Scanner connected to my PC running XP Home. I have started to get the message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)" after tidying up my machine. I have looked at various help files/Forum etc but the message seems to be you have to disconnect the scanner, re boot and then use the camera. What I don't understand is that I didn't have this problem before my recent tidy up? I really don't see why XP can't run both devices?
Any help much appreciated

which explains that you cannot use more than one USB scanner at a time. You would need to disconnect unwanted scanners when you want to connect your camera.
Despite the MS article I have a Mustek 1200UB scanner, an HP S20xi negative/slide/print scanner and a Canon camera. I seem to be able to connect any 2 of the 3 at a time. I only noticed the problem when I bought a *big* (7 port) USB hub, which I did hoping to be able to keep all my USB devices connected simultaneously! No such luck with WinXP - yet.

What exactly did you do when you say "tidying up"? Is it possible that you corrupted the TWAIN drivers?
I would try to reinstall the drivers for the camera and the printer/scanner.
