Few words of caution ...
Don't forget that OMR is a whole different ball game to OCR. With OCR if you haven't lined the source document up correctly the worst that can happen is some letters won't be picked up quite right. With OMR unless you line up the form EXACTLY the marks may be input to the wrong field. If you are using a "standard scanning machine" is this designed for OMR or image scanning? If it is mechanically fed you will have a better chance of the forms lining up correctly, if it manual feed you should adjust the decoding software to give it as big a margin of error as possible even though this means less data can be captured from each form.
In your example manually scanning the class list could mean that each mark is applied to the next student down the list!
