I think that is referring to scanrouter pro (I could be wrong).
Scanrouter lite, which comes free with the ricoh MFPs and scanners, by default has no password.
However, if you are running it at startup, or as a service, if you change the password of the user who installed it, it will fail.It will usually ask you to change the password at the first startup.

Below is the scan router password change procedure. There is no way to recover the current password.

1) Stop the ScanRouter service.
2) Open a MS-DOS prompt session.
3) Navigate to the ScanRouter installation directory. Default is c:\program files\rds
4) Type the command ddsinitial -auth
5) The ScanRouter Administrator password login window will appear to change and confirm the new password.
6) Exit MS-DOS prompt


use ddsmaint.exe -passwd to change the scan router password

On the fix from criticalspoke, after I typed
ddsmaint.exe -passwd
nothing happened.  Is there another command needed?

I just found where you can see what the password is
all passwords used and password changes are stored in a log file c:\Program files\rds\log\FmAdAuth.exe.log.  look for SetProp(Password:

Thanks janson143. Was able to find the password which was shorter than the one I thought it was. It must have got cut off.

Above steps by criticalspoke did not work for me.

I found the hard way that you can enter more than 8 charactors but it only stores 8.  so if your password is more than 8 and you tyr to logon the logon will fail.
