Question

Scanner not working when request being generated from computer

Asked by: jogrist

I can scan from my scanner to my computer, but when I try to trigger the scan from my computer using various software packages including photoshop, Smartthru, Control Panel.  I have tried this with 2 different scanners Brother and Samsung and they both work on other computers. I have cleared my usb drivers and installed, I have made sure I have the latest drivers for both scanners installed (uninstalled and reinstalled several times). Removed Twain32 (instructions from Samsung). Have set my DEP to allways off. As a last resort I cleared my computer down and reinstalled everything to original factory settings, as the brother scanner used to work on this computer at least 12 months ago, sadly that didn't work. I am now at the end of my rope as I do alot of scanning for my job and need this function to work. Sadly cannot afford a new computer, so really need to get this sorted.

can you scan if you open paint?  under file> scan from scanner ...

by: jogristPosted on 2008-03-22 at 16:09:40ID: 21188048

No I cannot do this from paint either. I get the following message when I try to scan through paint: "Unable to retrieve image from device. Verify that the device is properly connected and try again."  It is properly connected - it is a multifunction printer/scanner and I can print to it fine and also if I scan from the scanner to the computer it works. Very baffled. Acer and Samsung have both been looking at it for the last month have yet to come back with a solution.

try to run sfc /scannow from the run box
Did it ever work? if not, we may have to look in other areas

by: jogristPosted on 2008-03-24 at 15:00:04ID: 21197520

The sfc /scannow did not make any difference. It worked with a Brother scanner about 12 months ago, but now even that scanner will be triggered from the computer either, I can only send scans to the computer from the scanner. I have been using a Network scan facility on the Samsung scanner which is where you scan from the scanner to your computer and this works fine. But with the volume of scanning I now have to do, this is not a viable method of scanning and have converted to a direct USB link.

Sorry I should amend my previous comment to read. That because this is a multifunction printer/scanner, it does work as a printer - it will print from my computer just not scan.

Yes I did, no joy. Have had to get rid of the Brother now, as the printer part went wrong mechanically and too big to have 2 multifunction printer in the same office. So only have the Samsung to test with, but did try some of the brother solutions including the patch at the time.

Could be a simple install problem, is this xp home or pro?
Some hardware require a certain proceedure to install, now if you have had this hardware onboard and it's not removed cleanly there maybe a regestry key or even an empty folder still active,
some devices dont uninstall nice as they have services running and these have to be stopped too.
Xphome is more a problem in these areas since you need to remove the devices in safemode.
If you have a lot fo files you don't want to lose you could move this hard drive to slave
and consider buying a new hard drive same make and size as this one and clean install windows then install your printer first then the scanner.
Clean regestry and clean start.
Files intact on the slave.

Just ideas for you
Regards Merete

If you have any firewall or antivirus running, try disabling them (including the windows firewall). If that works, the device may be using ip over usb, and you need to open a port for it.

Thank you for your suggestions, I am using XP Pro, that came with my Acer computer. I have cleaned my drive and reinstalled everything from scratch to the original factory settings and still has the same problem. I have also disabled all my anti-verus and firewalls and sadly no success.

Have you by any chance disabled the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" Service?

Description of Service:
Provides image acquisition services for scanners and cameras.
Command Line:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc

To ensure that this Service is not disabled, type the following command into the Start Menu's "Run" field and press Enter:

services.msc /s

If that fails, then Right-Click My Computer > Manage > Expand "Services and Applications" > click on "Services" and then click on the "Standard" tab at the bottom of the right-hand pane.

Scroll down to, and double-click on the  "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" Service.  It should show the Status as either Manual or Automatic, and the other details should be as standard:
Description of Service:
Provides image acquisition services for scanners and cameras.
Command Line:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc

A lot of people (including me) immediately disable a bunch of unnecessary and resource-wasting Services after each fresh installation of Windows XP.  If you are in the habit of doing this, or in the habit of running one or more "tweaking" utilities, then this could account for a Service like this having been disabled if discovered to be.

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-04-05 at 22:35:24ID: 21290875

Also, open the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > "Scanners and Cameras".

Does it show any detail other than the "Add Device" icon?

Assuming that the following folder exists, then open it in Windows Explorer:
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\
Does it have any files loose in that folder such as "wiatwain.ds"?

Are there any sub-folders with names that reflect the names or model numbers of the scanners you have tested?  Example, for a Canon CanoScan N065U, my system has the folder:
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\N065U\
containing the Twain Driver files for that scanner.

Right-Click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
View menu > Show Hidden Devices.
Expand the "Imaging Devices" section.

Do you see an icon for any of the scanners you have had attached?

When double-clicked, what does it tell you about the status?

by: jogristPosted on 2008-04-05 at 22:58:22ID: 21290915

Thank you for your help. WIA is working, tried restarting it as well just in case, but still get the same problem.  The Sanners and Cameras, shows 2 devices one if my web cam and one in my multi-function printer which includes the scanner.  In the Twain 32 folders there are 2 again, one for my web cam and one for the samsung scanner/printer. In the device manager again the web cam and the printer/scanner are showing and when I go to the properties it shows that the device is working. I have tried removing the web cam to see if that makes any difference, but it doesn't.

Take a look at the USB plug your using, at the back of the tower, one has a small icon over it that's the default USB device I'd try using that one for the scanner, swapt them around and reboot.
how many usb back of the tower, one for mouse /keyboard /web cam/ printers/ etc.
Maybe one is faulty?
Does happen.
You may have to check if all the USB devices are connected to the mainboard.
Take a look in device manager how many USB ports listed?
Universal Serial Bus controllers?
Might pay to look in the hidden devices open VIEW tick to show hidden devices,
do you have any duplicates?

running out of ideas maybe you have a hardware fault?

by: jogristPosted on 2008-04-06 at 01:07:45ID: 21291096

Hi tried every single USB port I have. Could not find a small icon over any of the USB ports. There are 4 on the back 4 on the front. As I said it works as a printer so it is talking to the printer/scanner through the USB, but just not able to trigger a scan.

ok I'm going back to to your first question, please understand we can't see what you have there only work on what details you provide. The more accurate they are the better.
See if we can get to the bottom of this.
You said you tried to use>>photoshop, Smartthru, Control Panel.
Neither of these are the software needed to activate the scanner from your computer,

From what I can make sense of all of this you have two scanners installed on your computer is this right?
>>Samsung and Brother Scanner linked by USB, is this two separate scanners you have plugged in at the same time?

Please provide the make and model of both.<< I need this to see the manual..
Is this one of them??
Samsung
http://www.americopyusa.com/560%20565%20product%20guide.htm
looking at Samsung
This option may only be provided with >>(SF-565P only) version.
Maybe it uses the copier instead.
from the manual, and the reference you mention you tried to use the SmartThru, from what I read it's not used for actually scanning,

SmarThru" : Easy document
handling software with which the
scanned images can directly be
sent by email, fax or converted into
electronic document or HTML with
just one simple click. (SF-565P only)

http://www.copyr.com/pdf/SF-565P.pdf
------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure you have the correct USB cable plugged into the correct USB port on your chosen scanner. On my Cannon I have two dofferent USB connections.
What do you have for the Samsung Scanner in way of>Samsung  scanner  easy operation Panel?
---------------------------------
In reference to mine:
I have a cannon all in one and according to my manual as reference
Scanning using ScanGear
ScanGear enables you to scan documents such as photographs and magazines.
1. Place the document face-down on the platen glass.
2. On the Windows desktop, double-click  MP Navigator 3.0.
Alternatively, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, and point to (All) Programs, Canon Utilities, then MP Navigator 3.0. Then click MP Navigator 3.0.
MP Navigator opens.
3. Point to Scan/Import and click Open Scanner Driver.
ScanGear screen will be displayed.
4. Select Select Source according to the document to be scanned.

What I would do is simply power off both printer scanner unplug one and use one, plug it in again whlie it's off, then power on. Wait.
Since your actual error>>
Error during scan please restart the program and/or switch the device off, then switch it on again and wait while it warms up

by: jogristPosted on 2008-04-07 at 01:47:39ID: 21295172

Hi Sorry to confuse you. I have only one scanner plugged in, which is the Samsung multifunction printer. I was just saying that this problem is not unique to this scanner as I have also tried it with a brother scanner and getting the same problem. The brother scanner is not connected, just the Samsung. Yes the Smart thru ver 4 is used for scanning see the following: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/solutions/detail/solutionsRead.do?group=printersmultifunction&type=printersmultifunction&subtype=solutions&solt_id=51
The make of Samsung I am using is a SCX5530FN. I hope this clarifies things for you.

by: MeretePosted on 2008-04-07 at 02:58:52ID: 21295446

yep sure does, now I'll re-read everything to see if one thing sticks out.
I'll try and keep it simplified but there is a couple of areas  where I believe there is a connection and points to maybe a connection problem.

Point 1-
I can only send scans to the computer from the scanner,
which indicates that the software used to scan from computer to Samsung has never been used on your system?
Where did you get the >>Smart thru ver 4 << of the setup discs or did you download it off the internet?
you say here>>they both work on other computers.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Point two-
I have been using a Network scan facility<<< on the Samsung scanner<<<< this would indicate that the drivers supplied for the Samsung were for a network setup using an ethernet cable?
Your reference to >>they both work on other computers.<< was this when the Samsung was on a LAN networked?
------------------------------------------------
Point 3
I reinstalled using the discs sent with the computer. It does not allow you to install just a straight version of XP<<<< please explain?
-------------------------------------------------

See the connection with the drivers that were used previously?
And when it was on a network?

------------------------------------------------------

Point four
But with the volume of scanning I now have to do, this is not a viable method of scanning and >>>>> have converted to a direct USB link.<<< did you simply un-plug the  Samsung and move it over to your computer and using some USB cable plug this into your computer?
---------------------------------------

Point 4
As a last resort I cleared my computer down and reinstalled everything to original factory settings, not a good idea since then you have upgrade all your software again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok I think I found one thing that sticks out
--------------------------------------
>>>> I have been using a Network scan facility <<<

 >>>> and have converted to a direct USB link<<<<

the big point:
  jogrist
they both work on other computers.<< when??
Did you use the ethernet cable you had used before?
A straight thru cable is different from an ethernet cable on a lan.

Where did you get the Smart thru ver 4  from.
so to ask clearly I think the problem is the  so called USB cable you are using.

How did you change from the local network to direct USB
what USB cable are you using?
Thank you hopefully this is progress
regards
 Merete

by: jogristPosted on 2008-04-07 at 04:02:30ID: 21295644

Ok the Samsung multifuntion printer/scanner etc can either be used with a usb connection or an ethernet connection. The smart thru software is on the samsung disc that was provided with the scanner for use with the USB connection. I couldn't get the Smart thru software to work or in fact any other software that pulls a scan from the scanner through to the computer e.g. paint brush, adobe photoshop etc. I can scan using the USB cable (which I have changed to one that I know works - so not a USB cable fault) from the scanner to my computer, where I trigger the scan using the buttons on the actual scanner.  There is also a facility for network scan using a eithernet cable connection on my local network, which works but will not allow scanning triggered from my computer, I have to initiate it from my scanner. Hope this makes sense. So there is not a problem with the USB cable, plus I have tried this set up on another computer using the same cable software (smart thru) and it works. It does not seem to work on my computer and would like to resolve this. My computer is an ACER

by: cj_1969Posted on 2008-04-07 at 04:43:29ID: 21295863

Did you have the scanner connected to the computer when you reinstalled?
I have run into problems with the order that drivers and connections of hardware are done.
Check the instructions ... if it says to install the software and THEN connect the device, do it this way.  Windows sometimes sees a device when booting and then for some reason the drivers just will not install and access the device.

If this is the case, go back and uninstall all software related to the scanner, remove the device from the hardware manager and then clean the registry and hard drive of any references to the device and its software.

DISCONNECT the scanner.
reboot

Now install the software and drivers.
Next connect the scanner and then power it on.

Windows should then see the device and automatically install the correct drivers.

If this does not work then the only other thing I can think of is that for some reason Windows thinks that the device is on one port when it is actually connected to a different one (i.e. USB 1 as opposed to USB 4) ... so that when you initiate the scan from the scanner it connects but when trying from the PC it cannot connect to the device since it is communicating on the wrong port.

Check your event logs and see if there are any messages there ... if there are, post them, they might tell us what the exact problem is.

Okay good the hard bit is over all those details, there is one question still in the dark and maybe relevent
Point 3
I reinstalled using the discs sent with the computer. It does not allow you to install just a straight version of XP<<<< please explain?

Where I'm heading is to eliminate issues one by one.
If it is a driver conflict.
See it could be some kind of corruption with windows installer.
The fact you can take it over to another system and it works shows it's a clean install on that system teh drivers work straight off.
you may just have incorrectly the installed software or there is old regestry key still standing from previous versions or something went wrong when you installed the Samsung.

by: jogristPosted on 2008-04-07 at 04:50:48ID: 21295910

Hi no I did not have the scanner connected and I have followed the instructions. Even had the Samsung people go through it with me and they are baffled.

Please can you let me know where and how I can check my even logs?

too many cooks here if cj_1969 wants to take over  that's okay just don't want to double up with new suggestions..
there is still one question Ineeded,
reinstalled using the discs sent with the computer. It does not allow you to install just a straight version of XP<<<< please explain

go to control panel administrative tools event viewer jogrist, if

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-04-07 at 12:53:52ID: 21300002

Hmmm.  Merete's comment about how to open the Event Viewer seems to have been cut off after the "...if".  I will try to guess what it should have been.

If you receive notification that you do not have permission, then log out and back in as Administrator, or as a user profile that has administrative rights.

You can start Event Viewer in other ways also:
Start Menu > Run > and type the following command:
eventvwr.msc /s

Right-Click on My Computer > Manage > expand Event Viewer under the System Tools section.

Look for relevant Dates and Times under the Application and System sections when you have tried to access the scanner from an application.

Just out of curiosity, find and double-click on C:\Windows\System32\wiaacmgr.exe and tell us what happens.

I suggest that you re-register the DLL files that are concerned with "Still Image Acquisition".  If they are already registered OK, then no harm will be caused, but if they are not already registered properly, or you have corrupt registry settings, then this will write the correct registry entries.

Scroll over and copy the text from the Code Snippet.
Paste into Notepad.
File > Save As > save to somewhere like your desktop with a name like "FixSTI.CMD".
Including the " " around the file name ensures that it saves as a *.CMD file rather than a *.TXT file.

Close Notepad and double-click the CMD file.
It will prompt each time to register each of the 5 *.DLL files and inform you on success or failure.
Finally it will export a relevant registry key to the root of your hard drive, usually C:\ named "StillImagekey.txt".  Upload that file here as an attachment for us to inspect.

By the way, there seemed to have been some difficulty encountered by others finding in your Samsung SCX5530FN multifunction device on the Samsung support site.  That's because they use a hyphen in the model number (SCX-5530FN).

I found some other files that MAY be able to shed some light on this issue in addition to the Event Viewer:
C:\WINDOWS\wiadebug.log
C:\WINDOWS\wiaservc.log
C:\WINDOWS\Sti_Trace.log

Hi Thank you for your help.
Ok in answer to your questions about XP. I tried doing a straight install of XP after I cleared down my computer using Windows XP discs, but it would let me do this. It would only let me install XP using the discs provided with the Computer which was a total package of software from ACER which include windows XP but it was all merged together as opposed to just being able to install XP on its own. Hope this makes sense.
The error log shows the following:
Type      Date      Time      Source      Category      Event      User      Computer
Error      09/04/2008      01:45:44      Service Control Manager      None      7000      N/A      JOANNE

Error      09/04/2008      01:44:03      Service Control Manager      None      7000      N/A      JOANNE

When I double-click on C:\Windows\System32\wiaacmgr.exe I get the following error message "The computer cannot detect the scanner or camer. Please make sure that the device is on and properly connected to the computer" (which of course it is).

Sorry not sure how to re-register my dll, but have completed the cmd file as you suggested and uploaded the file to this site.

Wiadebug.log as follows (not sure if this has anything to do with my scanner, as a problem with outlook about this time).:

Have you checked in system devices open VIEW show hidden devices.
I'm beginning to belive it's either two things ther was a regestry key still active and is using these resources preventing you from re-installing or a faulty USB port.
I'll offer this tool SIW which is great for looking into problem devices on your system

Have viewed system devices and showing hidden devices and it shows nothing else under Imaging Devices other than the Samsung. Is there anywhere else I should check? How would I check the registry key? Would a faulty USB allowing printing, but not scanning?

by: MeretePosted on 2008-04-08 at 19:11:39ID: 21311367

It's about drivers jogrist
If you uninstall the product and it had services running that were not stopped prior
the uninstall may leave behind an empty folder in programfiles and or a regestry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
 look in the program name
In my regestry as I have a Cannon all in one>>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Canon
So when re-installing it picks up on this key and does not replace it correctly.
Possibly will not run correctly.
I had a similar problem with Nero and spent a day finding every single key  service folder and source to all and any Nero bits to install my newly purchased Nero7 full package. It requires teh previous be fully uninstalled.
I found references to Nero everywhere.
I was trying to save from re- formating
It worked of course.

Ok I unplugged the scanner, I have removed all the software and I also went through the registry and removed any mention of samsung, smartthru etc close down my computer and then restarted it. Reloaded the software, re-connected the scanner/printer. Printer works fine. Scanner still not scanning from the Computer (will scan to the computer). This time I also went through the control panel and tried to trigger a scan through Scanners and Camera Wizard and got the following error message: "The scanner is out of paper". This is a new one and before you ask yes there is paper in the machine, but obviously a scanner shouldn't need paper. Also went into the Scanners properties in Scanners and Cameras and tested the scanner and it tells me that "Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test." Anything else I can try?

by: MeretePosted on 2008-04-09 at 04:16:57ID: 21313601

wow, what is the difference between the other computers and your system?
The smart thru software is on the samsung disc that was provided with the scanner for use with the USB connection only??
can you find the driver name it's using?

When you installed the Samsung drivers was this before you installed the smart thru software
Always check back to your control panel events viewer  to see if any new bugs are being logged with event id numbers.

I'll take a look at the text file you generated and uploaded, because I'm just leaving for work.  In the meantime could you please explain what you mean when you say:

>>> "Scanner still not scanning from the Computer (will scan to the computer)" <<<

Do you mean that you CANNOT "Acquire" images INTO applications, but that activating a button on the device itself activates an event that triggers the opening of an application with the scanned image or OCR'd document?

This is on a USB connection, isn't it?
Maybe I missed it, but just to verify that it isn't on an Ethernet cable connected to a Network Router, or is it?

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-04-23 at 09:22:26ID: 21422421

... I'll take a look at the text file you generated and uploaded, because I'm just leaving for work....

Sorry, that was almost 20 days ago.  I did make up some notes, but forgot to return and post them.  By the way, I am still curious to know the answers to the questions I asked at the end of my last comment.

Continuing...
I will examine and compare the "StillImagekey.txt" later, but on first glance the following seem to be registered as programs associated with StillImage Acquisition (STI):
MS Word, MS OneNote, Adobe Photoshop CS3, ScanSoft PaperPort, Readiris 10.

The only scanner-related program name I see mentioned in the registry settings exported to that text file appears to be one for the Brother scanner.

C:\Program Files\Brother\ControlCenter2\brctrcen.exe

By double-clicking "brctrcen.exe", I suspect it would open some kind of interface like a small toolbar from which you would be able to pre-configure different scan modes.  I'm basing that on my knowledge of Canon scanners which open a small program dialog (Scangear Toolbox) when the scan button on the scanner itself is pressed.  Some flatbed scanners use the lid as the button instead.

Pressing that button is detected as an "Event", and your registry should hold the information telling Windows Still Image Acquisition-related services what do when certain related Events are detected.

For instance, you may decide to configure the scanner so that pushing the Scan button on the device would scan in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) straight into MS Word, or maybe just perform a photocopy print of the scanned document, or just to show the Twain Interface so you can control what to do with the scan.

When you open a program that supports Twain Acquisition, example the "Insert > Image > from Scanner" menu in MS Word, or the File > Import > Twain > Acquire (or similar) in an Image Editing application, these actions trigger specific commands stored in your registry.

These settings have to be there to start with, and the specific device set as the default scan source, also have to be set set and named in the registry.

An example:
The command I see in the *.txt file you exported for us from your registry relating to the Brother program is:
brctrcen.exe /StiDevice:%1 /StiEvent:%2

The %1 and %2 are replaceable values passed to or from programs holding what's called Command Line Parameters.  The /StiDevice and /StiEvent command line switches refer respectively to the named scanner and the particular event that was triggered and was passed to brctrcen.exe when the Windows Still Image Acquisition/Windows Image Acquisition monitoring service (STI/WIA) intercepted the Event.

From that it is clear that if the StiDevice name (or rather a unique numeric ID) is not stored in the registry, or if you tried running a command manually by adding known values to the %1 and %2 parts of the command to test scanning, then Windows and the scanner-related software won't have a clue what to do with the command.

Remember that there are different types of Event.  One triggered when you press a button or lift the lid of a scanner (sends a signal TO Windows), and Software Importing (Windows passes commands TO the scanner).  Plugging in and turning on a usb digital camera works much the same way as pressing a button on a scanner, and these devices are also registered as STI ones.

The part that sits right in between all these commands that are flying around are the Device Drivers installed by the scanner software.  This is just what Merete stated in his comment ( Date: 04.09.2008: "It's about drivers jogrist").  Without them, neither Windows nor the Scanner can make any sense of the commands.  Installing Drivers involves copying DLL, EXE, and other files to the correct folders, and then writing all the required values to the Windows Registry.  The absence of, a conflict between, or corruption of, either drivers or registry values will result in a non-functional device.

The writing of Registry values in Driver Setup packages is normally done from *.INF files unpacked to your TEMP folder.  A copy of the *.INF file used to create the registry settings is then usually copied to the following folder with a file name containing the device.  For example, from what I can determine, your Samsung Scanner's driver setup SHOULD have created the file:

C:\WINDOWS\inf\SCX5x30.INF

There may also have been "samsung" named *.SYS file(s) copied to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\

The Twain-related files should have been created in a new folder:
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\Twain_32\Samsung\SCX5X30

OEMCFG.dll, OEMDM.dll, OEMDS.DS, OEMDS.INI, OEMIMG.dll, OEMTW.dll, oemui.chm, OEMUI.dat, OEMUI.dll, OEMUI.ipb.

The following Registy key and values should have been created:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Samsung\INF Scanner Installer\SCX5X30

The following files should have been written to C:\Windows\System32:
Sswiadrv.dll, WIAEH.dll, WIAIPH.dll, WIASTIIO.dll, Ssuiext.dll, WIAUISTR.loc, Ssdevm.dll, Ssusbpn.dll.

I noted that the setup package should have created the following registry keys and value:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CC05778C-DC0F-4e7f-B3AB-0EA575477DB7\InProcServer32]
@="%SystemRoot%\System32\sswiadrv.dll"

and on that basis, if the files above ARE in place, perhaps running the following command may register what I determine to be an important DLL file:

regsvr32 /i %SystemRoot%\System32\ssuiext.dll

There are other registry keys and values that I think it is important to examine to verify if your scanners are actually named and assigned unique device ID's.

I suggest that you look under the following registry keys in Regedit, export them as suitably named backup *.reg files, and then delete any SUB-KEYS that you are absolutely sure are for your Samsung SCX-5530FN device, then try reinstalling the device again:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CC05778C-DC0F-4e7f-B3AB-0EA575477DB7}]

Look for the "Samsung" sub-key under the above.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\StillImage]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\Events]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\Events\STIProxyEvent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Control\StillImage\Events\STIProxyEvent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet002\Control\StillImage\Events\STIProxyEvent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Control\StillImage\Events\STIProxyEvent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\DeviceNameStore]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceClasses]

Note: {6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} seems to be unique to your device.  This is taken from the SCX5x30.INF in the driver package that I downloaded. If the following Sub-key exists for the last two registry keys above, then back them up to *.reg files and delete the sub-key {6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB]

Look also in the following keys for the same sub-keys as mentioned above for the \CurrentControlSet\ key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003]
etc.

Sorry for not responding the email didn't come through saying that anyone else had come back.
Merete in answer to your questions: The only difference is the make, mine is a ACER computer the others are a HP desktop and a Sony laptop. Both work fine with the scanner and the USB cable.
Yes Smartthru is used with the USB only, but I tried it this time with and without loading the Smartthru software (so I did load this after I installed everything else). Do don't think the Smartthru software is the problem. What driver do you want and where would I find it? No new bugs.

BillDL Yes that is exactly what I mean and yes it is on a USB connection. I will look through what you have sent recently and if I can make sense of it let you know what happens.

Hi
Ok I have read through everything and I have basically wiped out everything you suggested, but there was one set of registries it wouldn't let me remove and that was under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB] there was mention of the samsung about 3 times, but when I tried to remove them it wouldn't let me.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a\8U54B1CL800159M.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a&MI_00
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a&MI_00\6&3ade41ef&1&0000

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a&MI_01
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a&MI_01\6&3ade41ef&0&0001
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_04e8&Pid_341a&MI_01\6&3ade41ef&1&0001

They are also mentioned in ControlSet001and ControlSet003 (I don't have a ControlSet002).

Thanks

Not sure why the registry entries won't delete, but don't force it.

One last thing I would do before trying to reinstall the device is to look in the C:\Windows\INF folder at the files named "OEMx.INF", where x is a Zero upwards.  These are the setup instruction files for devices where Windows XP didn't have its own drivers to supply.

Open each one in Notepad and see if you can find one that is unique to your Samsung SCX-5530FN device, and was obviously used.  Create backups of that file (and any other files around it with the same name but different file extension) to a neutral folder, then delete them to the Recycle bin.

Restart the computer, to ensure that all other hardware is working OK and that Windows isn't detecting any new devices, then restart and try to install the device again.

This time, I would try and aim first for getting only the Scanner Driver and Printer Driver installed using the downloads from the Samsung site, and then try and install the software.

The driver downloads are self-extracting archives (Winzip works), and each set of extracted files can be burned to separate CD's.  The autorun.inf files in the root of the new CDs would make each one run to the menu when inserted.

You will have the manual that will tell you the recommended steps to execute, and in what order, but generally you run the setup by double clicking the package, allow it to finish and reboot, THEN connect the device.  I haven't read the manual though.

Hopefully everything will work this time.  Fingers crossed.

Hi

Sad news I am afraid. It didn't work still having the same fault, but now it wont even scan using the buttons from the scanner. Going to try and set it back up with the network connection to see if that works still, as I can't be without a scanner. Open to anymore suggestions - trust me I removed everything I could relating to this scanner, the brother scanner and also my web cam (just in case it was interfering with anything).

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-04-25 at 23:25:48ID: 21444716

Hi jogrist.
That's a pity. I hoped it would clear out any conflicting settings to allow a fresh start.

Just to be sure that the default registry settings are in place, open a command prompt window and type the following commands one after the other, accepting the prompts and nofifications after each command:

regsvr32 /i %SystemRoot%\System32\sti.dll
regsvr32 /i %SystemRoot%\System32\wiadefui.dll
regsvr32 /i %SystemRoot%\System32\wiadss.dll
regsvr32 /i %SystemRoot%\System32\wiascr.dll
regsvr32 /i %SystemRoot%\System32\wiaservc.dll

I'm not sure of what is the best approach if that doesn't work.  Perhaps Merete will have some space now to post his ideas :-)

by: MeretePosted on 2008-04-26 at 21:22:24ID: 21448125

:p
thanks BillDL you're doing a great a job.
I'm all out of ideas really if you read back to what we have covered
 what's left?
Unfortunately without seeing the machine it's difficult to know what actions have been fully tried.
I know that even a folder left behind can cause a device to stop functioning if it belongs to a different driver.
I dont know if the software is a corperate issue and only allows so many connections or installs?
I think the problem at the base
some over lapping drivers imbedded deep in the regestry as you have kindly also pointed out too.
Formatting the system delete the partition is the only way out IMHO.
Regards Merete

Hi BillDL

I get the following message when I run the regsvr32 most of the time I get"
C:\WINDOWS\System32\XXXX.dll was loaded, but the DllInstal entry point was not found
then in this one I get:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wiadss.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found

I have gone back to a network scan as opposed to a USB connection, I don't know if this makes any difference, but still wont pull a scan from the computer, but I can send it to the computer using the network connection which I needed as I had work to do that involved a great deal of scanning. I can change it back if this is causing the above problems.

I hope I don't have to clear it down again. I have done this once, but because it is an ACER computer it will not let me clear it down completely and will only let me re-load it from the ACER discs that came with the computer. (I have a full version of Office XP professional (Not ACER version) and it wont let me load that I keep getting a blue screen error).

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-04-30 at 04:57:23ID: 21469803

It's a nuisance having an OEM Recovery CD version of the operating system.

I have to confess that I'm really not as acquainted with network type functionality for printing and scanning, and would be guessing with any suggestions.

In answer to your regsvr32 error messages, all that means is that the DLL file is not one that is capable of being registered by regsvr32.exe.  Think of DLL's like a shopping mall, and the internal resources as the shops and facilities.  Program calls can be likened to the messages passed by emergency services despatchers.  They tell the personnel:
1. which street (folder) to go to
2. the name of the arcade (Dll file name)
3. the best way to enter for their required job and what part of the arcade (Dll Entry Point and internal function)
4. what to do when they get in (specific Dll resource).

In the case of the regsvr32.exe /i filename.dll command, it assumes that the Entry Point is the internal resource named "DllRegisterServer".  When running the command to Unregister a DLL (regsvr32 /u filename.dll), then it's looking for the "DllUnregisterServer" entry point.  Without either of these inside the DLL, it isn't the type that can be registered and unregistered in this way, and any related registry entries pertaining to it are created by other means (most usually from an *.INF file used for instructions when a setup package was run).

I'm going to have to sit back and hope that Merete or other experts may have a solution up their sleeve, because I'm fresh out of ideas.

by: MeretePosted on 2008-04-30 at 17:26:35ID: 21475649

I'm all out too but you did give me an idea BillDL here>OEM Recovery CD version < this system never worked for the printer in this situation via USB as it was networked previously.
As stated>>
the brother scanner used to work on this computer at least 12 months ago,<<
Also stated>
As a last resort I cleared my computer down and reinstalled everything to original factory settings<<original settings confirmed>> indicates  maybe it has returned the previous settings to Big Brother Printer??

Note this comment>>Have had to get rid of the Brother now, as the printer part went wrong mechanically <<<
So only have the Samsung to test with<<<

but did try some of the brother solutions including the patch at the time. << maybe there is still a reference to big brother printer.

I would  find all reference to big brother printer and delete them jogrist
Empty folders/services/drivers regestry keys. Temp folder<< especially

If the Big Brother was the default printer for this system maybe it's not being removed fully?
Accounts/Profiles  may associate to this printer too
Have you considered making a new administrator account/profile?

Hi Merete and BillDL

Thank you both for your help. I have given up too. I have cleared out all the Brother refrences, but you have to remember it didn't work with that scanner either, the fault was not unique to the samsung scanner, it affected every scanner that I plugged in. My friend has lent me a computer, as ready to chuck this one out of the window, I have still have the techs at ACER and Samsung looking into the problem, so if they come up with a solution I will post it on here - but not holding my breath. I just think I have got a gremlin unique to this computer.

Thank you again both of you for your help. I am now going to spend the weekend loading everything on the borrowed computer (which I know works with the scanner). Thank goodness it is a long holiday weekend here. :-)

Jo x

Hello jogrist no probs it was worth a shot yeah agree there is a Gremlin on that system.
If you delete the partition and clean install let us know if that worked.
I bet your sick of looking at it though and it may just stick it in a corner gather dust lol.

If BillDL has no objections the way to close this out is click Accept on your final comment as that is really the answer, there was no solution.

All the best and thanks for using Experts Exchange
