Question

Canon DR-5020 on Vista not working

Asked by: Helios1

I have an old but reliable Canon DR-5020 scanner that I've recently moved to a new Vista workstation.  And thus the problem begins.

Vista 32bit workstation on Dell Optiplex 755
Adaptec AHA-2930cu SCSI adapter in BIOS shows scanner fine as ID:0
SCSI shows fine in Windows Device Driver
Scanner shows up under "other devices" in Windows Device Driver as Canon DR-5020 SCSI Scanner Device, but does not have any driver details.
After windows loads it comes up with the Found New Hardware wizard.
The Scanners & Cameras applet in the Windows Control Panel does NOT have the scanner listed.

CapturePerfect 3.0 (& the upgrades) have been installed, but the Found New Hardware wizard continues to come up and the scanner is still unusable inside of the CapturePerfect software.
Attempts to load an old driver from the file d551mux.exe have populated the right scanner as a selection in the CapturePerfect sofware, but selecting that scanner throws us to an immediate blue screen.  I'd give you BSOD details, but it restarts so fast I haven't gotten them down.
Before loading the d551mux driver file the "select scanner" box was empty in CapturePerfect.

Is the scanner driver supposed to be installed with the CapturePerfect software?
If it is, then why doesn't it work and why does Windows keep bringing up the New Hardware Wizard.
Has anyone gotten a 5020 to work on a Vista system?

The scanner should have a TWAIN driver to work with scanning applications. It should show up under Imaging Devices not Other Devices.

Canon USA web site has the twain driver here for you to try:

I did try the 5020DRIT.exe file also.  It also did not work.  What I have seen so far is that the stand-alone files like this one work only for XP & older and cause problems on Vista.

Thanks for the fast response... hopefully you have another one up your sleeve.

OK, well if the USA can't help, let's try Europe:

Under the OS, they have Vista listed so let's try that.

Unfortunately, I've been here too... The CapturePerfect 3.0 (& the upgrades) was my reference to this, but perhaps not detailed enough.  You need to have the 3.0 software to start with which I didn't because I had the old Scan Utility 5000 that ran on XP so I had to buy the 3.0 software & then I installed the upgrades referenced on the canon-europe site.  No luck.

OK, let's try a different tact. Have you tried updating the drivers for your SCSI card to the latest compatible with Vista? Also, try changing the SCSI ID for your scanner and then try reloading the drivers.

by: Helios1Posted on 2009-05-04 at 15:00:15ID: 24299737

The drivers from Adaptec's website are the same as the drivers currently running.  I have not tried a different SCSI ID.  I will try that.

As for reloading the drivers.... that's part of the problem.  Unlike in XP where there were definate drivers that could be downloaded and then installed.  I have seen no stand-alone Vista drivers that could be loaded unless they are installed with the CapturePerfect 3.0 software.  I can't tell since when I ran it initially it didn't show any drivers when I clicked "select scanner".  I only got it to show any scanners in there at all when I loaded the old XP drivers at which point I got my BSOD.

Going by what Canon Australia state on their web site, The Vista drivers are coming...eventually...for some of their older products, which would likely include your scanner.

http://www.canon.com.au/vista/

You could try contacting Canon support in your country to see if there are Vista drivers in the pipeline.

And also, take a look at this table. Unfortunately there are no drivers listed for Vista:

Thanks Pete Zed,
I hadn't thought to go digging into the other Canon sites.  It does certainly appear that this scanner is not going to work on Vista at this time.  I'm going to take your advice and spend a few hours on hold with Customer Support.  I mean hey, who doesn't like to listen to on-hold music with lots of static?

While Canon provided software "CapturePerfect 3.0" that was Vista compatible, the drivers for particular scanners including mine are not Vista compatible.  Since the drivers are not available, my question is answered... my problem just persists.
