HP Scanjet 5590 - Won't scan when PC is locked

If the PC is in a locked state, the scanner fails to scan.  It scans fine when un-locked, but If I initiate a scan while it is locked, nothing happens, and upon un-locking, I see a "hpqscnvw has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
