I have a problem with WIA in Windows 7. I'm using Brother MFC-490CW printer. Every time I try to scan using hardware buttons on printer I get a pop-up window on PC to select application to use for this scan. For default i want to use just BCC3 (Brother Control Center 3) application to handle all my scan jobs, because I can define there which application should be used for acquiring job scan. In simple word, BCC3 just passes image in RAW format (as I suppose) to application set as default in BCC3. Problem is that before scan is passed to BCC3 a window from WIA pops-up with question which aplication should be use to handle scan (i.e. Windows Scan & Fax, Picasa or mentioned BCC3). This is very confusing because printer and BCC3 itself has such function like "print-to-file". Basically (when configured in BCC3) allows to scan directly to file somewhere on HDD without any questions from OS/PC. This is very usefull because it allows to scan multiple images/scans without touching PC, but just by using MFC hardware keys. Unfortunatelly each time I try to scan I have a pop-up window from WIA to select application to parse image to so I have to go to my PC and click on BCC3 from list of applications. This is really confusing.
NOTE !!! All text below marked in "quotes" is translated from polish to english by me, so it doesn't have to meet their excact translations in english version of Windows.
I've already found that default application to parse scan can be set here:
"Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Devices and printers"
It contains a list of hardware on PC. One of this hardware is PC itself (named excaclly as NETBIOS PC name). After clicking right mouse button on it and selecting "Scanning Properties" there's a tab like "Events". Here we can define what WIA should do after clicking particullar hardware button on MFC Device. Options are: "Run program" (where we can set a program to run - this is an option which should do what I want), "Ask for a program to use" or "Do nothing".
In theory that should be it what I wanted to to set..... unfortunatelly changing this settings doesn't work. After changing this option from default (which is "ask for a program to use) to any different (like always use a program [name form list here]) I get an error: "Changing registered service has failed. Make sure device is power on and connected properly".
I can assume for sure that this is not driver-related problem. For 100% this is a WIA problem in Windows 7.
Explanation: I have two PC's with Windows 7. On one of them I can change this settings for this printer without any problem, on second one problem occurs as described above. Device was installed from excacly the same driver/software package from Brother site on both PC's. Of course I've tried to uninstall / reinstall Brother software for device.
It seems to be obviously that problem occurs to single PC and MUST be a WIA problem nor BCC3 problem. Simply something is wrong with WIA system on that particullar PC. Futhermore window that pops-up to select scan destination (mentioned before) is for 100% sure comming from WIA nor BCC3. As I've already learned WIA compatible devices are communicating with PC to WIA system in Windows and not to device-specified software like BCC3. Also window which allows to change default application (also mentioned before) is a WIA configuration tool from Windows 7 and not from BCC3.
So my question is what is wrong with WIA on my PC and how can I fix it?
In attachments are some samples:
1. WIA configuration window
2. Error window occuring each time I try to change settings in settings window from Point 1.
3. Window that appears each time I try to scan using hardware buttons on MFC.
Unfortunatelly these screen-shots are in polish.
