multifunction card reader  wont read sd cards

I installed a multifunction usb 2.0 card reader in a dell dimension e521.
Xp Home machine with service pack 2
It shows up in my computer as drive e and in device manager as a Multi flash reader usb device.
It also shows up in device manager under universal serial bus controllers as a usb composite device.
I can plug a usb flash device into the only usb port and it works I can access data on the flash drive,
however when I tried an sd card it didn't recognize the card.
When I clicked on the e drive it locks up as soon as I remove the sd card it allows me to view the properties of e.
The sd card works in my digital camera and in my printer. It is not the sd card.
This reader didn't come with any drivers it says windows xp will detect the right drivers.
I have removed it from device manager and let xp re-dectect it.
But it still does the same thing when it re-detects the device.
I need a solution for this quickly as I have to return this computer to my customer in the morning.
