xD Card reader does not read xD card

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 notebook, with an internal Ricoh xD-Picture Card Reader. The reader was able to successfully read my 256MB Olympus xD card for a number of months when I first got the computer. However now when I insert the same xD card, the computer does not assign a drive letter or recognise that a card has been inserted.

I have installed updated drivers for the device from the Dell website, but it has not solved the problem.
