I cracked the case open and the led on the board was tiny and it had a plastic cone that funneled the light to the case. I put a piece of electrical tape on the plastic and it works great.

There is no way to do it via software. If the camera is on, so is the light. It's just wired that way. The only suggestion I could offer is maybe a piece of black electrical tape? If you're handy to crack the thing open, you could break the LED off the board and put it back together.
