The CIF comm interface is a common issue with webcams. You've already resolved it with the download you detailed above -- the Add New Hardware wizard won't run anymore as it now has both the common interface driver (not specific to your camera) and the drivers for your specific camera.
What you downloaded wasn't "for my webcam" -- but it is what you needed ... the generic CIF drivers.
Bottom line: Problem resolved -- your system is now fine :-)
[I agree, by the way, that you should have a "clean" Device Manager :-) ]

OK, nobody seems to be interested in giving me a clue - maybe it deserves more points?

The Webcam is a Vimicro USB2.0 UVC PC camera.
I downloaded a set of files from the following site:
http://www.esnips.com
and it appears to no longer be seeking to run the ANH wizard any more.
I'd still like to know whether this is a generic thing or not? I don't even know if what I downloaded was for my webcam - but it works. Unfortunately I haven't learned a thing though!
