Question

Philips Webcam Driver for Windows XP SP3

Asked by: nep1

Hi, I want to install my step dads webcam which was designed for Win98 onto his WindowsXP OS. I've searched Driverguide, Philips support and Googled for an XP driver but I can only find drivers for win98...

Does anyone know of an XP driver download link for the
Philips Webcam

Or know of way to get around installing the Win98 Driver?

Ive run the driver as Administrator and in compatibility mode for Win98. It seemed to be installing but then asked me to insert the Win98 CDROM which I don't have. I might know someone who does have but I'm not sure if this would even work with an XP OS...

This is from there support site.

Software delivered with the camera is not designed for this window version.
Driver software available in Windows.
Just plug in the camera in the USB port and Windows will install the camera.
For updated drivers see Microsoft website (Windows update).

Looks llike windows should have the drivers built int what happens when you try to use install ?

Hi Steelers, thanks for your quick reply.

I downloaded the driver from a site I found on Google, can't remember the name but it wasnt from the Philips support site, nor from Driverguide.

The computer that I wish to install the driver on was designed for Win98. This includes the monitor which I've had to replace because I could'nt find an XP driver, and the Webcam.

I'd already tried plugging in the Webcam and nothing happened, so I had a look in Device manager and let Microsoft search for the driver automatically but it could'nt find a suitable one. I tried updating the driver manually using the Have Disc option but it's not having it..

When I tried to execute it seemed to be installing but then asked me to insert the Win98 CDROM...

I was thinking maybe I could change the drivers coding to make it compatible with XP. The Scanner which comes with this PC was also designed for Win98 but I managed to find an XP driver for it that  had been re-coded from a Win98 driver.

The Motherboard, Processor and Memory have all been upgraded. The PC is compatible with XP, the only thing now thats not is the Cam...

is the cam USB ? Maybe Usb drivers need updated or ?

by: nep1Posted on 2009-08-17 at 09:33:33ID: 25116046

Yes, it is a USB Cam. I've just tried updating the drivers for the USB controllers from within Device Manager allowing Windows to connect to Windows Update to search for software and to Install the software automatically using the Hardware Update Wizard but it could not find a better match than the software currently installed.

I've tried the Windows Custom Update, but there are no updates for the USB.

Thanks, do you have any other suggestions? Please don't say buy a new Cam haha. I'm sure other people have had the same problem and not everyone can afford to buy a new Cam.

Does XP recognise a USB device when you plug it in?
In theory the chipset should be PnP in NT so XP should see it without additional drivers.  Have you any other USB devices plugged that might be pulling power from the hub it needs to work/be seen?

by: nep1Posted on 2009-08-17 at 13:32:50ID: 25118098

Thanks flubster, I won't get chance to see if it asks for a particular file untill tomorrow. As I remember it asks for the Win98 disk only and not a specific file but I'll let you know for certain tomorrow...

Masqueraid, thanks for reply. XP recognises any other USB device, the notification pops up saying it's found new hardware but with this webcam it doesn't say anything, however it does appear in device manager...
No other USB devices are plugged in apart from the Cam...

Can you open the Device Manager entry, go to the 'Details' tab and paste the Device Instance Id (unless it just says "Unknown")?

- appreciate this won't happen until tomorrow

It might also be worth telling the installer that the 98 disk is present so it  throws up an error about a specific file it can't find (or alternatively if you happen to have a 98 CD ...)

flubster,
When it asks for the W98 disk, it does not display a particular file.

Masqueraid,
Here is the Device Instance USB\VID_055F&PID_0002\5&73CD85C&0&3

During Installation it displays the following -
Please insert the Windows 98 CDROM into drive D:
Press Yes when ready or press No when the Windows 98 CDROM is located somewhere else...
If I Click on Yes
It returns to the message just stated
If I Click on No
It asks me to Please specify the location of the Windows 98 CD... But doesnt create an error or display a particualar file, it justs asks me to Browse...

No worries.  Older webcams especially are seriously hungry for power and draw virtually all the USB hub power.  If someting got there before them they just don't work and Windows can't ID them.
