Unable to start spool manager on Epson color stylus 800

I am getting two messages when I try to print.  First) Epson Spool Manager - unable to start spool manager, and second)  Fatal error: cannot load journal dll - please reinstall.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Epson printer program to no avail.  I have referred to an earlier post in this forum regarding this problem but procedure did not work.  I am on a Win 98 machine with PC 1 Click installed ( saves me from most all operating problems), lots of memory.  On one reinstall I got to Print O Matic Xtra error, error code= -1.  Never got it again and never never did anything to change it except reboot and reinstall.  One of the problems when following the procedure previously posted was that the computer would lock up when I started the end task process after using ctrl+alt+del.  That procedure always ended in locking computer up.
Can anyone suggest a solution?  I expect more information will be needed, but where do we start?  Thanks. Ron.

Some questions for you....

Did you have any previous printers installed ??? if so what were they ?? even if you uninstalled them please list them....

When you installed the printer did you have anti virus software running such as Norton Anti Virus, AVG, McAffee ???

Is you printer connected Parallel or USB ?

Did you have any other devices connected to the same port as the printer is ? (i.e. scanners, external drives, etc.)

Also how much free hard drive space do you have ? are you low on free space at all ?

Thanks for fielding the question Brian. let me see if I can get your questions answered.
1)  Only the one printer ever on this machine.  There are now three copies of this printer program.  I attempted to uninstall, but after rebooting they reappear.  Epson color stylus 800.
2)  I currently have just AVG on the machine.  I have tried rebooting with it on and with it disabled.  No difference.
3)  Printer connected to printer port LPT 1.
4)  I do have scanner connected but on USB.
5)  Memory should be ok.  34 gig available on hard drive.  RAM is 512 mb with 300 available.
One more thing Brian.  I had an older version of McAfee Virus Scan on the machine tjat I forgot about.  It was not installed.  I deleted it this morning.  Have not tried printer since though.
Okay

thank you for the info.

what concerns me is the fact that you uninstall them and the installations come back...

How are you uninstalling the previous installs ?

Are you going to add/remove programs and then selecting uninstall or are you going to start programs epson uninstall... or are you going to start settings printers and deleting the printer ?

Something I would like you to try turn off the anti virus and then hit ctrl, alt , delete and end task everything except for explorer and systray then attempt to uninstall again... if uninstalling yields the same result the printer is not removed... then try doing the above steps and reinstall it sounds like something is corrupting the install.

try this and let me know
I had previously used the add/remove programs on the printer program.  I have since removed all files related to Epson.  It is not reappearing now.

When I turn off the ant virus and use the ctrl, alt, delete and end task procedure I end up with the following on the menu before I have a problem with the computer locking up; Explorer, Loadqm, Rundll 32, Systray, Ptudfapp, and Rnaapp.  Using end task on any of those four selections other than Explorer and Systray, results in the computer freezing and I have to reboot and start over.

Also you may want to go to epsons website and download the most recent driver for the printer.
YOU THE MAN, BRIAN.

That whining, clidking, ratcheting sound of my printer is back.

Thank you for a software lesson.  Ron
So what worked the updated driver or the going into the msconfig going to startup and disabling everything ?
Going into  msconfig was the solution as far as getting past the problem with the computer locking up.  The whole process of disabling everything in startup is the solution to re-loading the printer program.

One interesting thing though.  After having removed and deleting everything Epson related on the computer, when I reinstalled, the printer folder page now shows four copies of 'EPSON Stylus COLOR Printer' icons with a check mark on the fourth copy.

Again, many thanks to you Brian.  Another printer saved.
if the copies are all exactly the same the one with the checkmark is the driver you are using i.e. you default printer. You could delete the other ones it is up to you. I have noticed the Epson software corrupts very easily.... You are the third person with an epson printer to have this problem that I have helped and disabling the items in MSconfig or end tasking was what finally allowed the install to go in without any problems.

Anyways glad I could help. :)
