Static Noise

Hi

I have a k6-266 mhz with 128 mb ram and win 98.

Recently I notice an annoying cracking sound coming from my speakers when I move the mouse or when the screen display changes.  If idle, there is no noise.  It has some thing to do with the mouse or when the screen refreshes.  It is a cracking/static noise that is not loud but just enough to frustrate me.

I downloaded the recent driver for the sound card which is a SB AWE 64 but that does not help.  Besides that, the sound is perfect.

I must also point out that this problem only happens intermittently.  I would say it disappears about 1/3 of the time.

Please help.

try moving your speakers further from the monitor
if your monitor has function buttons try degauzzing the monitor.

jasquild,

Is your speaker output line loose this will cause this noise,  not normally from the display changing but the mouse moving cout be moving the cord just enough to move it. I doubt this is the problem but something that you might want to check in the interim of our investigation

My sound card is an ISA card.  I know this is old technology but could this be a potential culprit??  The thing is I dont remember this problem before.

The only thing I did recently is to install a new harddrive and reinstall windows 98.

check and make sure that everything is tight and also check the device manager and make sure that you don't have any conflicts..

Keep your mouse cable well away from other cables, any type of cable.  Try your mouse that way and see if the problem goes away.
No luck yet.

This evening I openned my computer and changed ISA slot.

I connected a headphone directly to computer and still heard feed back.  I therefore concluded it is not the speakers.

I also noticed that the static sound is still transmitted even if I mute the volume in windows.

I also noticed that the static sound is being amplified by the speaker if I turn the volume up

Besides that I checked that every other connetion is snug and that the mouse cable is not close to other cables

STILL NO LUCK.  :(

I also tried degauzing the monitor and moving the speakers from near the monitor without any luck.  Also speaker output wire not moving.

Any ideas will be appreciated

I connected the speakers to the line out jack instead of the speaker out jack and I am not hearing as much static.

Is there a difference between these jack?? They seem to be the same to me.  Is ok for me to leave it there until I find the source of the problem??

Is the offensive sound related to mouse/cursor movement? If so, I would say that it is the signals carried from the mouse that somehow interfere with the sound card. Try another mouse, if you have one... It could also be that the interference reaches the sound card via the power supply. Check all connectors thoroughly.

Hey Rid

NOt sure I understand your question.  When I move the mouse which moves the curser I hear the feedback.  even the slightest mouse movement which does not move the position of the mouse cord generates the sound.  So I guess I would say curser movement.

Cursor movement on screen.  Screen display being refreshed.

If when you use the keyboard to alter the screen dispaly, eg CTRL-ESC and keyboard to open an application and the noise appears, start suspecting strongly the video card and cables associated with it.
shift around the video card and sound card putting them at far extremes (as far as possible from each other)

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Dont ask me to explain it but it works.

thanks everyone.
