GeForce2 MX not working with Win XP

Hi!
In Win XP Home Edition the graphics card drivers (even the latest one won't start showing error: This device cannot start. (Code 10) )
My graphics card is WinFast GeForce2 MX 400 DH Pro (AGP), motherboard Intel 440ZX chipset based model (Procomp?) B687ZX bios v1.2, BIOS ID: 03/02/1999-i440ZX-ALI513-2A69KPNDC-00
Award BIOS v4.51PG
(System info reports it as Intel 82443BX) which i think maybe a source of the problem? I noticed someone asked a question with the same mobo & a GeForce card here https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20342915/GeForce4-MX-440-Causes-PC-to-Lock-up.html
but unresolved.
Tried the usual unistall of the GeForce driver then auto install, manual install etc no use.
Only a XP default VgaSave driver works which shows the following conflict in its resources tab page:

Input/Output Range 03B0 - 03BB used by:
Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller
Input/Output Range 03C0 - 03DF used by:
Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller
Memory Range 000A0000 - 000BFFFF used by:
Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller

In System Information, Conflicts/Sharing its listed:

I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB     Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller

There are no IRQ conflicts.

Tried the latest drivers of GeForce from WinFast "W2K_MX_11031" but same problem.
The same configuraton works without a problem in Windows ME. So how do i get it working in XP?
Thanks, JJ.

Memory Address 0xEC000000-0xEDFFFFFF     Intel 82443BX Pentium(r) II Processor to AGP Controller
Memory Address 0xEC000000-0xEDFFFFFF     NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400
according to this it does see it as the geforce2MX
i would update all the motherboard drivers especially the AGP controller.
you do not need mobo drivers for an intel 440 based board in win xp
.  INF Update Utility [INFINST_ENU.EXE] (1342KB) 4.04.1007 Download 10/7/2002
This utility installs INF files that inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality such as USB and AGP.
Readme (txt)   Release Notes (htm)
OS: Windows* 2000, Windows* 98 SE, Windows* Me, Windows* XP Home Edition, Windows* XP Professional
 Download File(s): English 1342KB, Multi language 2421KB

You can get updated files like the one above at intel's website.
if you are using a third party board that has 440 chipset, then I would check there site as well.
lets not over look the little things.
ooops I didn't notice that you did specify your mobo maker.
The infinst_enu is for later boards such as 810/820/850/845 based chipsets.

the 440 chipset is so old that XP knows exactly how to talk to it.

"Tried the usual unistall of the GeForce driver then auto install, manual install etc no use"

jimjoe07 already tried several was of reinstalling the card.

The infinst_enu is not just for the 800 series chipsets it is also for the 440 series as well and the updated inf utility was just released on october 7th 2002.
could be other people hade the same problem and they had to release an update who knows.

And can't you use the xp cd and do a repair installation?
(this is a question cause I'm not 100%)
In BIOS, have you selected "reserve IRQ for AGP"...T

I had tried the Intel Chipset Setup utility from the mobo site, but it said XP drivers were upto date and exited without installing.
My card has a TwinView & TV out and i had tried the latest drivers from WinFast for it (generic nVidia detonator drivers cause problems with power management, when systems goes to standby it will not come back on key press/mouse move)
The problem was solved when i checked the BIOS setting "Assign IRQ for AGP" in PCI/PNP Configuration, which was disabled (curiously, WinME works without a prob even with this setting), i enabled it and indeed XP picked up and started the GeForce2 MX drivers. So 2 people c661jmb & tmj883 gave the correct answer, ideally i would like to share the points with both of you, but i think since c661jmb answered it first, i accept ur comment as the answer.
My sincere thanks to all those who posted their comments, JJ.
Hello,
I ran into the same problem with my computer. WinXP just uses the VGASave instead... I've read all of the answers here and tried to find the Assign IRQ for AGP in BIOS setup page but I did not find any option like that ...... I'm really desperate now ... !!!!! Please help me !!!!!
I have to say that 99.9% of BIOS on mainboards for desktop PC have "Assign IRQ for VGA" somewhere.

Per chance, do you have an Intel 815 based Mobo? or one of those boards by VIA that have Via Graphics and an AGP slot?

I have seen a couple of these boards that are badly implemented and do not disable the onboard video automatically when an AGP card is used.

There may be a jumper onboard to disable the onboard video - try that.

Also ensure that Power Management and PnP OS are enabled.

Hello, I checked my Bios quite thoroughly. My Mainboard is from Gigabyte, GA6BX700, Award Software.
The PCI/PNP page in my BIOS page has 5 options. One of them is "Resources Controlled By" to config the IRQs manually or automatically. I set it "Manually" and set every IRQ to "PCI/ISA PnP".  Another option is "Reset Configuration Data" which is set to Disabled. The 3rd option is "Reset Configuration Data", Disabled. The 4th option is "Used MEM base addr: N/A". The last option is "Assign IRQ for USB: Enabled".
I found in another page in BIOS that has the Assign IRQ For IGA, which is already set to Enabled. Also in this page, there is an option - PCI/VGA Palette Snoop : Disabled.

I don't know what's wrong with my computer. The whole machine was totally messed up after I unplugged and plugged back the video adaptor card. Before that, both Win2000 and XP had run smoothly (i've got 2 OS installed). Right after I unplugged the card, I rebooted, win2000 went back to 4 bit color. I was really angry and annoyed. So I went to Nvidia website and download the lastest driver for the card (TNT M64). After installing the new driver, still nothing happened. I then formatted the whole hard drive again in order to start with a new fresh install of WinXP. I installed winXP for about 3 times and still got the 4bit color display! :(

Hope you can help me solve the problem .... I really appreciate your time and efforts!

Thanks alot!
Nhat
The problem is this: your mainboard supports only AGP1X. The video card supports only AGP2X/4X. Get yourself a 2X/4X motherboard or a 1X/2X/4X video card. The choice is yours, but what you have now is incompatible. T
I'm sorry for having not stated clearly about my computer problem. Before I unplugged and plugged in back the video adaptor card, everything had ben running very, very smoothly, both win2000 and XP. My TNT card is fully compatible with the mainboard, for I have been using the computer for almost 3 years now.

I've got a tip from some friends ( I haven't tried to do yet ). They advised me to unplug every card out of the mainboard and install one by one, starting from the video card, then the ethernet card, then sound card and the rest. Probably because all the cards got their own orders to be plugged in. So when I unplugged the video card and plugged it back, the order was broken, the mainboard just refused to "see" the video card (this time, plug-and-pray, comon, baby run run run!!!!). I'll try and tell you all about the result. Hope this helps. If not, I'd better buy a new ATI card instead.

Thanks you all alot!

Nhat Le
Thanks you all for your time! I've solved the problem, finally. I made another post at [ https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20659161/Windows-2000-XP-and-VgaSave-Problem.html ] in order to help everyone who would come up with the same problem.
Again, thanks alot!
