Darn Epson Scanner and USB ports.. error while trying to open data source

I used to have my scanner working perfectly. However I then used the USB port on my Compaq Windows 2k computer for a digital camera. After switching back, the scanner will not work.

I read Dejanews, went to Epson site, and tried the following becuase I kept getting in one of a few graphics programs the message "Error while trying to open data source".

I of course ensured that the Twain Driver was first selected. This is an Epson Perfection 1200 U (usb).

I have no exclamation points or question marks in Device Manager. No conflicts or anything.

I have deleted the Epson device (while on of course) from Device Manager as well as from Cameras and Imaging under Conrtol Panel.

I also went to the Hardware Wizard and uninstalled the device there.

I also have uninstalled the Twain drivers from Add/Remove Software.

Have deleted the Program Files directory for Epson and the Windows/Twain_32 directory.

I have downloaded from the Epson Site the 5.x drivers as well as the 4.x drivers and installed them without the scanner on or the USB plugged in as instructed.

I then rebooted (cold or warm did not matter) with the scanner plugged in via USB and turned on.

Hardware Wizard came up as usual and selected it correctly.

But still I get the error message. Tried every variation I could think of.

Getting frustrated and tired.
I did upgrade from Win 98 some time ago but that was about 1+ years. I did get the scanner working under 2000 until I loaded a USB Fuji camera and drivers (which I uninstalled) and then plugged the scanner back in.

Not sure what is going on. However I know others have had this problem with a few scanners and few OS's.

All advice appreciated.

Thanks, Peter

It is quite possible that the fuji camera drivers replaced some of the files required for the scanner, however, it is not likely that is the case if you have reinstalled the drivers.  But did you uninstall the camera drivers after the scanner drivers were uninstalled? or before they were?
Also, it is possible the usb connection is loose. Since when you unplugged the camera you may have accidentally nudged the scanner's usb connector.

ASKER

Scanner cables are tight. Tried new cable and that did not do it. I could not find the drivers to uninstall from the Device Manager or from Cameras/Imaging but I did remove some entries by using Registry Cleaner.
Thanks, Peter

Found and removed the camera drivers as you first suggested. I found them in Hardware Wizard. Also did a search on hard drive for anything containing "fuji" in it FWIW.

I also got rid of something called RegShave in startup that had to do with Fuji camera and I guess knowing when it was attached and creating an I drive for the images.

Then this morning I ran the Twain installation and then turned on the scanner and pointed it to the INF file. I then rebooted and still receive the Unable to open data source error message. I know others have had this problem from reading the newsgroups and I will solve this eventually. May need to call Epson. But will keep trying.

When I search thru registry for Fuji I still find a few keys like this but am afraid to delete them for fear I might lose one of the USB ports (I do have a modem that is attached to the other).

ControlSet001
  USB
   RootHub
           Vid_04cb&Pid_0100
                Y-242^^^^^010405W0000001060660
and under here lists a number of parameters that point to USBSTOR which is fine but also lists the MFG as Fuji Photo Film...

I tried to delete this key as I have a backup of the registry key but cannot delete it. I am not sure how to delete it. Cannot rename either.
When I try to delete it says "Error while deleting key"

Thanks, Peter
Here is what I found that solved at least my problem-A service needed to be running:

Kept getting the message "Unable to
Open Data Source" or "Reinstall Scanner Software", depends on which
imaging program you use.

Was on the phone with Epson for about $9.95. It was worth it as it
took about 45 minutes and between the two of us-we figured out the
problem at least for me. I was out of warranty.

I would recommend you try this and hope it works for you-it may not:

-Uninstall the Epson Twain software from Control Panel-Add remove
Software
-Go to Control Panel and Cameras and Scanners and Remove(delete the
device).
-Go to Control Panel, Add, Remove Hardware.
Select the radio button to "Unplug/uninstall a device" (click on Next)
Then Select Uninstall a Device. (click on Next)
Click the box that says "Show Hidden Devices".
Scroll all the way through the list to see if your scanner is there.
Mine was there even though I removed it. Then delete it.

-Unplug your scanner from the USB. Power it off.

Reboot if you want.

-Now reinstall the Epson Twain Software found on their website.
Version 5 I believe.

-Okay now plug in your USB for the scanner.
Power on the scanner.

Plug and Play Wizard should Identify the Scanner. Install it.

We are not done yet.

-Go to Control Panel, Scanners and Cameras, you should see your
scanner listed there.

Click on Properties. If the box that says "Test" is grayed out and or
the device status says "Unavailable" on the screen, we have one more
thing to try....

-Go to Control Panel. Select Administrative Tools. Now click on
Services.

If you have a service called "Still Image Service" and it is either
disabled, manual or not running...change the properties to Automatic
and Start the Service.

Hopefully (flip a coin), your scanner may work now... Mine did.

To be sure, I performed this process twice.
