asked on

motherboard MSI K7N2G-L How to hibernate?

I have the -L, not the -LISR version (MCP2, not MCP2-T)

I have installed WinXP, SP1, have turned on "Enable Hibernate Support" in Control Panel\Power\Hibernate-tab. On  the Power\General-tab appears a drop-down box with "My PC Hibernates after xxx
minutes", etc. BUT I don't have Hibernate button in the Start\Shut Down-selection. There appear only Sleep, Turn Off, Restart.

How to invoke Hibernate manualy?

If you have a sleep button on your keyboard can't you program it to invoke the hibernate routine?

its shift.....
Okay.. this how to do it, the hibernate check box at Hibernate tab MUST BE CHECKED, and you must still has some free space left AFTER hibernation file created. After they are checked, then open PowerSchemes tab, check hibernate option. I don't remember in WinXP, but in Win2K it appears a new option said "System Hibernate". It should be the same with WinXP. Then you can open Advanced tab, and check for   hibernate at "Power button" options, or "Sleep button" options.
To manually, just choose shutdown, then when you presented with 3 option, press shift. The Standby option will turn into hibernate. But I suspect, if you can't see hibernate option at the buttons option, you won't see it when you press the shift also.

Okay, it's nForce2 right? nForce2 has a lot of controller which doesn't recognized by WinXP, you need to install the driver from http://www.nvidia.com. Obtain version 2.03, and DON'T use driver from manufacturer. Version less than 2.0 cannot work well with XP unless you install it manually. Windows WILL NOT be able to hibernate if you have yellow marked device, or to be exact any driverless device will prevent you from hibernate.
Another spotted problem was USB2. Remove USB2 driver (EHCI) then restart to force Windows to redetect USB2 adapter. It rarely installed if you install SP1 after you install the driver.
Another point is sound card. I have spotted a "naughty" board using MCP chipset, but has a third party sound chip. If your board one of them, have you install your sound chip driver? If you use MCP, don't try to attempt to install sound storm files and control panel, you will need to reinstall your windows or clean up your registry to fix that, otherwise, nForce will always detect your chipset as MCP-T and install MCP-T files in the future.
Next biggest problem is, if you just update your WinXP from another AMD board, especially VIA, I suggest to reinstall.
