Serial LCD

I saw on TechTV and other places about hooking up an LCD display to you PC to show you the time, etc.  I was this kind of thing at Matrick Orbital. (http://www.matrixorbital.com/products/lcd2041.htm).  I would like to use an existing LCD display to connect to my PC via serial.  (Such as a Palm III display?  Or one of those MHz displays?)  I don't know how exactly I would control them (aside from the fact off connecting them to the serial port) because I thought that the normal ones had some sort of firmware etc. on them.  So if anyone knows how to just connect up any old LCD display to a serial port and control (MANUALLY EVEN SUCH AS TELL IT "THIS DOT IS ON" :))  Thanks...

Quite technical I havent had the courage to spend the money to try to hook something like this up yet, but have considered doing so in order to build a automobile mp3 computer system

I am looking more at like LED type display that is small, like 4 lines by 20 charectars, like the ones at matrick orbital...  I am probably better off just paying the $60 and getting a real one, but I figured I might be able to get one for free by using my own extra LCD display (from liek a Palm III as I said before).

i had seen some utility on winamp.com that allows to display song information onto a lcd panel attached to the computer...u can try to look on there also...u might get the source code also..
How complicated is it to install a controller card into an LCD...  I have an AST laptop (486).../  Could I just plug the wires in and then connect the controller to my DVI or VGA connector and be ready to go?  (well I think I would have to set some sort of controller value though)
It depends If you have the right controler card That card would have the proper values and work correctly if not you would have to program the right values of find someone who already did then reflash the cards bios

I am guessing with a 486 laptop it is likely the values are not known (previouly hacked) and not worth the trouble of finding.

The following auction has most of what you need it looks to me like its still missing the power converter for the screen you could ask the seller if this setup has everything you need I think he is somewhat knowledgeable in this area http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31569&item=3406110949
