You should schedule a CHKDSK session on your drive.

1) Open a CMD window by Start Menu>RUN and type CMD

2) Type: CHKDSK C: /R /X

3) Reboot.

Sorry.  Haven't noticed anything but a very very slight hit on performance.  Then while I had control panel open for something else, I decided to check the event log for the hell of it and saw all these errors.  Other than that, there were no signs.

How full is your disk? I have had a similiar error, panicked, and then noticed my disk was full.

STOP SCREWING AROUND!!! MAKE A BACKUP NOW!
Because of the performance and extraneous hotfix entries in my add/remove programs I was going to reinstall anyway and had my files ready for backup.  Doing the backup right now.

Is this a sign of total hardware failure?  Am I going to want to return the HD to Maxtor for an exchange?  Or will a reformat fix the problem?
Whew!  I'm sure glad you did that backup!  Sorry to be so stressed about this but so many experts here are not really so expert and will lead you off on a tangent while you fritter away your last shot at a backup.

Yes, this is a message indicating that the drive's internal monitoring system (S.M.A.R.T.) has detected a fatal error in the drive.  It's dying.  After you get it backed up, you can get the DIAGNOSTIC program from the drive manufacturer's web site and run it.  This will query the error database and give you a diagnosis.  In most cases the recommendation will be "Call us and get a return authorization...".   If the drive is under warranty, you'll want to do that.  If not, then scrap it out and get a new one.
Thanks for the advice.  I swapped out the hard drive, after doing a backup of the files I needed to save, and replaced it with a new drive I was saving for my next build.  I noticed that there was also a high pitch whine coming from the old drive.  I actually noticed it a few months back but have been too busy to open the case and find the cause.  Ironically the start of the whine correlates to the beginning of the event viewer messages concerning an hd failure.  So I definitly think there is some kind of hardware problem and already got the RMA going.
It COULD also be the swap file that's corrupted.
Usually, event ID 51 happns when Memory manager tries to write to the page file....
SO - it DOES NOT have to mean a bad disk!!!
I realise that you can also receive this problem when something is off with the partition table, structure. Not too sure about file system but it's possible. But it relates to either the physical or logical aspect of the hard drive or storage device.
