battery problem
Hi,
My laptop can currently only be turned on when ac is plugged in. BatteryMon 1.2 says there is no battery in my laptop. However my battery is in. There is no error given by XP on startup. Is my battery broken? Or is something wrong when the connector? Buying a new battery is quite expensive so I want first to know if a new battery would solve the problem.
Thanx,
Alexander

No indication the battery gets charged.
In fact this problem came suddenly. I never experienced battery problems. After my 4 week vacation (not used my laptop) the problem occured.

<< Btw all leds of the battery are off. >> 99% for a broken charging circuit.
Don't listen to PeteLong ...he has a battery manufacturing facility and he's trying to sell as much as possible ...probably he hacked your laptop and cauised this problem ;>) joking....

It is a very old battery SMP 202P Lithium-Ion. At least 4 years old. But sofar I never experienced battery problems. The battery always could supply for about 2.5 hours.
The battery was indeed in the laptop all 4 weeks.
I searched for this battery and it will cost more than 100 euro :-(

If this is a 4 year old battery, you got MUCH MORE than is typical for such a battery. Count yourself fortunate. But failure of these types of batteries is NOT usually gradual but SUDDEN. Yes, these battery packs are expensive but that's the price you pay for the convenience of a relatively light/high capacity power storage device.
There are some places that can rebuild such battery packs for perhaps 50-60% of the price of a new one. You may want to search around your area for such a company:

http://shop.psaparts.co.uk/aka/powerup/servlets/Page.Filler?_page=static/manufacturers/simplo/smp-202p.html
Mine is a SMP Li-Ion. SMP-202P 10.8V 4 leds, and connector -TDC+

Try,
http://www.ebatts.com/product.asp?part=B-5887/LI&equiv=SMP-202P
if the price is right. They manufacture batteries with newer cell technology (their batteries typically pack more power than the originals). I have purchased a replacement battery from them and have been pleased.

Any suggestion for splitting points?
ASKER
I guess all input was relevant to me. Problem is not solved. That is not coz of insufficient help, just becoz the damn battery is broken...
I just wanna split points between all EE's who had helpful comments.
Anyway, I bought a new laptop and the old-laptop will be always used in a fixed location with power-supply available... I removed the battery..
