KVM problems!

I've just built a second PC (XP2500) and have connected my Flat Screen, Keyboard, and Mouse to both of them using a KVM Switch (this is the one i bought... http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=49457 ) But i'm having a couple of problems...

The first problem:

The screen and keyboard work properly with both, but neither PC will detect the mouse. I can only use a mouse if I plug it directly in to the PC (bypassing the KVM switch). My mouse is this... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006IZBN/

The second problem:

As stated in the KVM Switch's manual, to switch to the other PC, press the SCROLL LOCK key twice. Well, it does work, but it takes about a dozen attempts before it will recognise it and switch over. Which is becoming very annoying.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

is it a new switch?
if yes, do you have warrenty?
Generally speaking KVM's seem to work best with plain old-fashioned 2-button PS/2 mice.  Try such a mouse.
Also this may be a problem with power to the unit. It takes its power from (one of) the computers. Try switching
computers around on the cables; maybe one has problems feeding the switch.

is your mouse using the usb port?

i will try it and keep you posted.
I just swapped my mouse for an old 2button wheel mouse (PS/2) and it works on boths pc and it switches every time now. It seems that it was the mouse causing both problems.

The only problem now, is that the old mouse is a crappy ball mouse and i want to use my nice optical (the one causing the probs). what can i do?
also did you intall the software that came with the optical mouse.  It should work without installing it the software,  but that could be the problem.

You can use a logitech optical mouse, at least mine works ok
on my Omni View 4 port, one thing I have had problems with
in the past is using the Logitech mouseware drivers. After a
certain version (forget exact but in v6. something) if I had the
logitech drivers loaded after switching from that PC and
returning to it the mouse would go nuts. Use the default
windows mouse driver and all is well. Scroll works ok, but I lost
my middle button double click.
So is there nothing I can do to remedy this, other than a new mouse of different brand?

Also, as a temporary fix (before I connected the old mouse to the KVM) I completely disconnected the entire mouse part of the Switch and used two seperate mouses - one for each PC. But the switching problem remained.
Would this mouse be any good...?

The most is important aspects for my mouse choice are... Cheap, 5 Buttons, & Optical.
I realize that you would like cheap.  I used to like cheap intill the introduction of the optical mouse.  This was b/c ball mouses did not last very long so why buy a expensive one.  However,  an optical mouse would be of use to you for much longer than the old ball type.  So why not buy a good one for a little extra money?
A logitech mouse costs under USD$20, A 5 button one may cost a bit more,
you are most likely not going to get the use of the mouses buttons since the
advanced mouse drivers seem to get confused when swapping around, unexpected
states or values cause it thats all I know on that.
I get my left & right click and my scroll with the standard driver swapping 4 PC's.

There are absoluely no quality mice that you can get for under $10 except in a rare
close out sale or something. I buy the OEM Logitech opticals in 10 packs for $11.50 each.

As buckeyes said cheap isn't worth it you will spend more money over the long haul replacing
that kind of garbage.
And still, this may be a situation in which the user has to choose between the convenience of this KVM
switch and the use of a particular mouse/mouse type.

Mice take their power from the PS/2 port. Optical mice most probably take more power than ball mice,
because of a powerful LED and the sensor circuitry. This KVM may just not be able to handle it.

i dont care about expensive mice, I want to know if the one i suggested will work or not?
Never mind folks, I've solved it now. A friend has a similar KVM and is using a "Trust AMI 300 Optical Dual Scroll" mouse on it. And I used to have one of these mice but it went all juddery so I bought a new, different mouse. I just dug out this old Trust mouse of mine, and connected it up, and it seems to be working great. The juddering has gone, the switch switches everytime, and both PCs have a mouse.

I have awarded the points to "rid" because he suggested a different brand of mouse and that is basically what I have done... Used a different brand of mouse.
For reference, the Trust mouse is this... http://www.trust.com/products/frame-product.htm?artnr=12536
